Jazz guitarist Kenny Burrell is optimistic about the state of jazz of today. “It’s not bad, particularly now that we have embraced jazz into education,” Burrell said in a telephone interview from his office in the UCLA music department. “Audiences are beginning to appreciate jazz the way audiences have appreciated classical music.”

Saturday was officialy the first full day of music at the 29 th Detroit International Jazz Festival .
