Here's the latest compilation of assorted news briefs and links related to jazz, improvisation, and creative music in St. Louis, including news of musicians originally from the Gateway City, recent visitors, and coming attractions, plus assorted other items of interest. * Starting, as we usually do, with some Miles Davis items, it seems that the impending release of Miles Davis: The Complete Columbia...
Paraphrasing Last FM Kurt Rosenwinkel is a jazz guitarist who was initially influenced by guitarists such as Pat Metheny and John Scofield, but has emerged as an individual stylist recalling Lennie Tristano in the 1940s and 50s. His chordal language is amongst the more advanced for a guitarist, touching on ideas from George Van Eps and Ben Monder. ..... one of the leading jazz guitarists of his generation...

guitarz.blogspot.com : In our previous post about Uli Jon Roth's Sky Guitar, Bertram, my co-blogger here at Guitarz , made a note in the comments appealing for "Less frets, more strings!" Is this enough strings for you, Bertram? With a combined total of 46 strings, the Omstrument is the creation of Jack Haas and is a gestalt instrument comprising harp, guitar, longneck dulcimer, strumstick,...
Twenty four years on, I still love Arcadia's So Red The Rose . Only 8 vocal tracks, nearly flawless, and each simultaneously lush and angular. It was produced in 1985 by the late Alex Sadkin , who also produced Duran's Seven And The Ragged Tiger , and albums by Grace Jones and Thompson Twins. Rumor has it the album will be re-released in 2010. I hope it contains the extended versions, which are sublime....
One of the nice things about having moved the global/galactic headquarters of LondonJazz to N1 is what King's Place can do for the life of the mind. Last night I polled up for an interview with Steve Reich hosted by the London Sinfonietta - they're cranking up the fundraising for a new Reich commission in 2011. And what was the 73-year young Reich talking about, with a pace, enthusiasm and verve which...
Consider, for a moment, the sideman. The best ones have strong ideas of their own. And those ideas just keep growing as the sideman works with strong leaders.
BBC concert, 2000. A song from the soundtrack for the film The Falcon and the Snowman. The track is the result of a collaboration between the jazz fusion Pat Metheny Group and rock singer David Bowie who provided the lyrics and vocals. It was released as a single which reached #14 in the UK, and #32 in the US.
Funny. I threw a lot of dark and funky jazz into a folder and out came a sad rainy day set that has me wondering if iTunes doesn’t check out my weather widget. Playlist. Music. [Playlist included in the zipped file] [scroll down to Free, click, wait and then download] Despite what I said in the previous post’s [...]
Mornington Lockett (ten), Lawrence Cottle (bs.gtr), Martin Drew (dms). My first thought when I saw the name of the band - LCD - was that this was going to be one of those "This next composition is one I wrote whilst running for the bus..." type nights. I couldn't have been further from the truth! I should have picked up the clue from Mornington's tee shirt - it had 'Blue Note' printed across...

The first video showcases a brand new composition entitled 'Song for Joanna' performed live at the Blue Note featuring Avishai Cohen, Mike Moreno, Adriano Santos and Misha Tsiganov...

As a distantly Bill Frisell-like player who has kept company with class acts like pianists Paul Bley, Uri Caine and Matthew Shipp, as well as Polish trumpet star Tomasz Stanko, Irish guitarist Mark O'Leary is entitled to a bigger reputation. This trio set finds him with Pat Metheny's remarkable Vietnamese trumpeter Cuong Vu, and the Tim Berne percussionist Tom Rainey, on a set of pieces dedicated
