Bob Sanders: Cow Cow Boogie with Ella Mae

I just fell in love with Ella Mae Morse again. You will, too. Just follow the instructions of the old computer master.

A Nostalgia Trip with Colin Aitchison.

Colin has put together a collection of 40s/50s onwards, mainly big band clips, on YouTube that are well worth taking a look at. I was delighted to see and hear Johnny Desmond singing "Polka Dots and Moonbeams with the Ray McKinley Band of the 1950s. There's even a clip of Ivy Benson and her all-girls band. Ivy could play a fair bit alto à la Jimmy Dorsey. Nice one Colin. Lance.

NEW YORK, June 5 (UPI) -- Famed New Orleans-born jazz and R&B musician Sam Butera has died in Las Vegas his family said. He was 81. In The Footsteps Of Glenn Miller

I guess it’s just how things work sometimes, but it’s not unusual for talented musicians to sometimes be more remembered for their association with a big name than for their own abilities. A case could be made that Ray McKinley’s history with Glenn Miller fits that profile. The two were good friends whose paths often [...]

Retro Redux: In The Footsteps Of Glenn Miller

His longest gig was the decade he spent leading his buddy's band. I guess it's just how things work sometimes, but it's not unusual for talented musicians to sometimes be more remembered for their association with a big name than for their own abilities. A case could be made that Ray McKinley's history with Glenn Miller fits that profile. The two were good friends whose paths often crossed during...

GENERAL: The Curious Case of Marcy Lutes

Marcy Lutes' first solo recording as a vocalist was her last. After 10 years toiling in the big bands of Ray McKinley, Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey and Herbie Fields, Lutes finally was given a shot in late 1956. The album was called Marcy Lutes: Debut, and the LP might have been forgotten if it wasn't for the arrangers Decca brought in for the date--Gil Evans, Ralph Burns and Marion Evans (no relation)...

Bob Brookmeyer sent this message today: Bill Finegan passed peacefully on today with his son James and his daughter Helen by his side. He was a hero, a dear friend and one of the most gifted arrangers we have ever...

Duck and Cover

Who doesn't love a blog that can respond to a reader request for popular music about the A-bomb? With not one or two tunes, but seven....from a variety of artists, including Slim Gaillard, Ray McKinley, gospel's Golden Gate Quartet, and Gene Krupa. I imagine twindowlicker is someone who has lived at the same address for a great many years. As I have found, moving around a lot and a large collections...
