From Data Breaker : Sun Circle, Story of Rats, Eric Ostrowski, Aures (Josephine) Sun Circle (Greg Davis and Zach Wallace) explore beatless space, but in a more expansive manner. Whereas Mem1 score the body's inner gurgles and expirations, Sun Circle, as their moniker implies, radiate solarized drones that wax and wane in intensity in subtle increments. The sound is akin to that of Davis's Kranky Records...
The 19th Akbank Jazz Festival is commencing tonight. Tomorrow's big deal is Terje Rypdal at Aya Irini , but we'll be skipping it to check out the NYC Brass band Hypnotic Brass Ensemble .
Norwegian guitarist and composer Terje Rypdal turned from rock to jazz in the late 1960s. Here he's joined in a performance of "The Return of Per Ulv" by two other outstanding musicians, Miroslav Vitous on bass and Trilok Gurtu on percussion. Rypdal displays the dynamic fusion of jazz, rock and new age that characterizes his sound.
First heard Garbarek on the late George Russell's "Electronic Sonata for Souls Loved by Nature", on which I believe he contributed some of the thematic material. Just prior to that, I guess, ECM had begun to release his work, that fine string of records culminating in "Witchi-Tai-To" (maybe "Dansere"? We'll see when we get there). But the earliest recording is from 1969,...
Last week I was talking about my discovery of Terje Rypdal ; a couple of days ago, I discovered another Norwegian who's music I enjoy — Sigvart Dagsland . The serendipitous path that led to this discovery started with looking up some ideas on hymns for some friends who are getting married later this year. From there, I started looking around for places to listen to hymns and searched for that...
I have recently discovered the guitar stylings of Terje Rypdal , a Norwegian guitar virtuoso, thanks to a combination of Last.fm's recommendation engine and Spotify's huge music collection. What I have heard so far reminds me of Jeff Beck in a mellow mood, floating around with harmonics and whammy bar manipulations of his notes. Definitely an artist to return to. Want to add something? Please join...
Smith has been a favorite around here for some time with his work in Thuja, Hala Strana, Ulaan Khol and most often his solo work catching our ears often. Hardwick is a newer character on me but his resume certainly seems well in order with past collaborations popping up with Jon Balke, Terje Rypdal as well as electronic artists like Machinefabriek and Ryan Teague. The bulk of Westering feels very much...
I just started my subscription to Emusic again. Emusic is one of the biggest site for indie music download sales, and works on a subscription model, so you pay for a certain number of tracks a month. I get 50 tracks for £11.99, I think. My music’s been up on Emusic for quite a while, and [...]
The simplest and therefore most successful of Rypdal’s power-trio albums, Chaser features stripped-down and somewhat bluesy rockers with lots of kick-ass guitar, at times harkening back to his Vanguards days. Norwegian guitarist Terje Rypdal never achieved the level of commercial success that his fellow ECM guitarists Pat Metheny and Bill Frisell eventually did, but he made some excellent music...
I would like to share two videos...yes that's right! 2 for the price of 1! The first is an orchestral piece written by the Norwegian composer and guitarist, Terje Rypdal. Rypdal has been one of my favorite musicians for many years. He started as a young pop star in Norway in the late 60's, then began to play a very unique style of guitar based Jazz that expanded as he became more adept writing in his...

This is my ninth TR CD and is top notch...
Most fusion is bad music. Because it brings lots of technical skills with little or no creativity, often centered around the guy on the guitar who wants to take on self-proclaimed stardom. There are some rare exceptions of fusion musicians who seek other things. John McLaughlin is a true musician in that sense. He is interested in the music, and his fabulous guitar technique helps him in achieving

Jazz CD Mark O'Leary/ Uri Caine/ Ben Perowsky, Closure (Leo) John Fordham Friday January 13, 2006 The Guardian Buy Closure now As a project with its inspiration avowedly in the music of the eclectic but jazz-rooted piano star Paul Bley, this is perhaps not the usual fare from category-busting European label Leo Records. But almost nothing with New York pianist/composer Uri Caine on it follows a straight
Earlier in 2007, in one of my reviews, I combined two new albums by Mark O'Leary, and I will do it again now, because the Irish guitarist is as prolific as Ken Vandermark or Satoko Fujii, releasing no less than seven (7) albums in 2007 ( Waiting , with Cuong Vu and Tom Rainey, Radio Free Europa with John Herndon and Matt Lux, On the Shore with Alex Cline, John Fumo and Jeff Kaiser, Signs with Alex
