Another two-country day. We hired a car to drive from Antwerp, Belgium to Apeldoorn, Netherlands, so I could tour Paleis Het Loo and its gardens, created by King William and Queen Mary. A couple of scenes in my novel take place there. It was a pleasant drive to the Gelderland and the forest areas where William enjoyed hunting--he purchased Het Loo for that very purpose, and and and Mary soon

Layers, blends and individuality can make for a diverse music set. Bassist Nicolas Thys brings that with all-original songs on Virgo. Thys is a native of Brussels, Belgium. His first instruments were piano and flute, but at the age of 13, he switched to electric bass. Over the years, he's earned several European jazz honors, and he's performed at some of the region's main events, including North Sea...

I'm a whistler. I know it can be an annoying habit. But I'm (hopefully) self-conscious enough about it. I don't do it in the office I share with two others. I don't do it when I'm out with people. I'll...

With pianist Ray Bryant, bassist Tom Bryant and drummer Oliver Jackson completing the quartet, Thielemans is in excellent form introducing two of his originals...

The internet has become an immensely valuable resource for me because I’ve never studied violin with a teacher. When I was a kid, I studied piano. My lessons were like those of many people. I learned a lot of basics, but never became really a “musician.” Ironically, my teacher was a violinist by profession. But I [...]

I fell in love with the John Williams soundtrack of this movie many years ago — does the early seventies sound long ago and far away enough? And I’ve got to tell you, if you only know the music from the movie, you don’t know it. The music by itself without all the dialogue and movie [...]

Quincy Jones was the conductor of the WDR Big Band. He was enamored of Toots's musicality, wit and warmth. Who isn't...
