Of all New York's original crop of punks, Richard Hell might have been one of the most influential -- and, paradoxically, overlooked.

Bloc Party and Coldplay fan John Lydon is taking a break from revisionist history (remember, you ripped off Richard Hell, Johnny, not vice versa) to sell Country Life butter. A fitting product tie-in for someone who's gone (always was') so soft. Surprisingly, it's reportedly the first time he's appeared in a television commercial, because going to board rooms to hawk Guitar Hero III doesn't count....

"Everybody has to have a gig, so that's mine." His next gig is tonight, Thursday the 14th, at the Velvet Lounge in Washington, DC, and it's not often you get to see one of the legends of the guitar for $10. He's a man worth seeing live. Of...

This video of Richard Lloyd (from Television) is wonderful and bonkers. Highlights: 3:00 when he starts chanting numbers and says "Agriculturalcadabra" and 5:38, when he orders his guitar to obey him. If you're really clever, there are lots of guitar lessons on his site, which includes Why is the guitar tuned like that? . (Thanks, Drew) Music Thing wants: Jomox T-Resonator £200 , USB Cassette Deck...

From all reports last night’s Billy Joel concert was the event of a lifetime. I guess if you’re a Joel fan it was but as an angry young teen when Billy Joel was playing Piano Man, I was into the Sex Pistols and “Anarchy in the U.K.” and hanging out at Max’s Kansas City, CBGB [...]

About 18 months ago I wrote an optimistic piece about the potential return of 1990’s power pop master Matthew Sweet. weet had recently posted a a medley of new songs being considered for the album, all rich with the boisterous guitars and pop melodies that made 1991’s Girlfriend so magnificent. Fast-forward, or slow-forward as [...]
