Victoria Coren in The Observer on celebrating a big win in Las Vegas: It feels big here, especially with the new tradition of playing each winner's national anthem to a crowded room. But there is a scandal brewing over Kabbaj's ceremony: as he ascended the platform, the organisers played - quite by accident, they claim - God Save The Queen by The Sex Pistols. Eighty per cent of the watching Brits...
"out of the spotlight, Global Zero, a new alliance of prominent diplomats, military and civic leaders, is beginning to persuade the nuclear powers that there is only one answer to solve this crisis: the elimination of all nuclear weapons.Presidents Obama and Medvedev are meeting next week. Let's call on them to put their historic pledge into action and lead global efforts to achieve a nuclear
I don’t know much about Joy Division. I was too young to have known about them when they existed, and the place I grew up wasn’t exactly a thriving centre of post-punk, so I wasn’t exposed to them after the fact either. I didn’t know much of their history either, but after watching 24 Hour [...]
Albany, NY's After the Fall recently recorded three new songs with NYHC producer Don Fury at his new studio in Troy, NY. Veteran producer Fury previously worked with bands like Born Against, Quicksand, Agnostic Front and Gorilla Biscuits. The new EP is titled Collar City and will be released on vinyl on to-be-announced labels. The band released Fort Orange earlier this year.
American born (but British raised) singer covers song from Husker Du's Warehouse: Songs and Stories. I have a soft spot for Heidi Berry's music. It is a shame that she hasn't released an album since 1996. I would strongly recommend looking out for Pomegranate, an Anthology that was released in 2001. It can be picked up quite cheaply on Amazon.
Not sure how I feel about the New York Dolls these days - sure, they're one of the most influential bands ever and Johnny Thunders was one of the coolest dudes ever to hold a guitar. But he's long dead...
Yesterday I went shopping before my shift at Value Village and purchased two dresses. The first is a sheer number that I'm wearing in the above photo on top of a black tank dress. It was absolutely beautiful outside today so I stopped by the beach to get some sun. The colors are dark but with a light breeze and sheer fabric it felt just right. The second dress I will post about later because it's...
This is the only Ramones tribute CD I own. I downloaded the other 60 odd that I have collected from Soulseek. This one is a bit different from most as the vast majority of these bands are not trying to sound like the Ramones (The Huntingtons being the noticable exception and of course The Marky Ramones group) My favourite here is the Dancehall/Ragga version of Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue (track 6)...
