Well, it's Friday and you know what that means. Yes, my Oriental hand/groin coordination consultant Fah Lo Suee and I will be off to lovely In any event, further posting by moi will have to be sporadic for a day or two. In the meantime, then, here's a hopefully fun little project for us all: Best or Worst Post-Elvis First Pop/Rock Band Featuring an Artist Who Became Better Known in a Subsequent Band!!!...
First, a hearty congrats to the New Orleans Saints, and to all the fans, and to the city's spirit. Second, seems as good a time as any to put in another plug for Irma Thomas, the Sweet Soul Queen of New Orleans. Her songs -- many early on produced by the great Allen Toussaint -- range from the playful "(You Can Have My Husband But) Don't Mess with My Man," (1960) -- to the beautiful "Ruler...
In my final musical tribute to New Orleans, in honor of the Saints' playing in this evening's Super Bowl, I've included a 2006 video of Elvis Costello and Allen Toussaint performing the title track of "The River In Reverse." Yes, the song is about Hurricane Katrina. The pair are perforing on "Late Night with David Letterman," and Letterman seems genuinely enthusiastic about the...
Yesterday I posted a video of Elvis Costello and Allen Toussaint performing "Who's Gonna Help Brother Get Further" from "The River In Reverse" --the 2006 collaboration between Costello and the New Orleans' musical legend. Here's another song from that collection, "Ascension Day." This song is not about the New Orleans Saints and their ascendence into the Super Bowl. But...
Elvis Costello and Allen Toussaint recorded "The River In Reverse" in late 2005, it is believed to be the first album recorded in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina hit. Both men are great songwriters, but Toussaint is more of a studio fixture than Costello. On "Who's Gonna Help Brother Get Further," Toussaint does most of the singing, although Costello handles most of the vocals...

The past week I've hit a pretty big Funk/R&B zone, particularly looking at New Orleans inspired music. It's been cool, and pushed me to find a lot of new tunes outside of my usual sphere of influence. I've stumbled across so much goodness that I'm going to subject you to a whole week (read: 2 days) of it. The first one is a bit of a cheat. Lee Dorsey was born in New Orleans, however, moved to Oregon...

Once again, the Grammys' Urban/Alternative category continues the Recording Academy's tradition of rewarding minor innovation, if you can call the nominees that. Baby steps to the left are all I see. Or, this year continues the Grammy tradition of highlighting...

On the brilliant The Bright Mississippi, virtuosic pianist Allen Toussaint brings back the sweet old New Orleans flavors with his own subtle, elegant reconfiguration. Backing up by a cast of all-star players including clarinetist Don Byron, trumpeter Nicholas Payton and guitarist Marc Ribot, Mr. Toussaint takes apart jazz standards like Louis Armstrong’s “West End [...]
Stumbled across King Curtis while listening to Allen Toussaint linked artists on Last FM. Really liked what I heard and then checked him out on Spotify - there was a pretty extensive choice of stuff to listen to. In fact it was pretty daunting. Anyone care to recommend any specific albums of his - my preference would be to veer away from the lighter side of his catalogue.
Oh well, another month is about shot; and my reach once again has exceeded my grasp. So much to post, and very little time to do it. And, of course, who can do anything when the Saints are playing, except gnaw our nails up to our elbows. WHO DAT? They pulled it out last night. As promised, I've got a couple of more tunes written and arranged by Allen Toussaint to toss in here. Not exceptionally rare,...
Allen Toussaint isn't scheduled to take the stage for another 20 minutes, but Scott Spychalski has already spent an hour casing the inside of the Folly Theater. A music promoter tries to engage him in small talk in the lobby, but the 41-year-old photographer with spiky blond hair and Elvis Costello glasses shifts his weight back and forth restlessly, his eyes darting around the room.
Well, it’s January already, so that means it’s time to start thinking about the summer concert season. The first major announcement of 2010 comes from our friends at Celebrate Brooklyn! who will be hosting Boston’s Passion Pit and Newmarket Ontario’s Tokyo Police Club on June 29, 2010 at the Prospect Park Bandshell (Buy Tickets | [...]
NEW YORK (Billboard) –There's just no slowing down Elvis Costello. After launching his "Spectacle" TV series in December and releasing his latest studio effort, "Secret, Profane & Sugarcane," this past June, the punk icon is set to debut "The Costello Show Series," a selection of rare live recordings from throughout his career. First up is "Live at the El Mocambo," a heavily bootlegged concert from...
