Today is the birthday of Ike Turner who was born in Clarksdale, Mississippi. He was a Grammy Award winning musician, bandleader, talent scout, and record producer. He is probably best known for his R&B work as part of the Ike and Tina Turner duo. His career lasted half a century and he played blues, soul, rock and funk. His first recording, "Rocket 88" by "Jackie Brenston and his...
It is generally acknowledged that the first Bebop record was Woody 'n' You by Coleman Hawkins, the first Rock and Roll record was Rocket 88 by Jackie Brenston(Ike Turner) and his Delta Cats, and Miles Davis Birth Of The Cool was indeed what it proclaimed. However, was Bob Dylan's Like A Rolling Stone the first Rock single ? Was The Byrds version of Mr. Tambourine Man the first Folk/Rock recording...
Here’s the latest batch of Music Musings and Miscellany’s unapologetically subjective selection of the twentieth century’s best 1000 singles. The end of the Rs. MODERN LOVERS – Roadrunner Once / Roadrunner Twice (Beserkley 1 1977) The rhythm’s straight out of the Neu motorik! handbook. The bass line is equally hypnotic. On top of it, Jonathan Richman’s [...]
Memphis blues - now that's a broad category, because so much great blues music came out of Memphis. When I think of Memphis, the first thing I think of is Sam Phillips and Sun Records. A lot of great sides came out of that studio. Here's Billy The Kid Emerson performing Red Hot. Little Junior Parker didn't have a whole lot of range, but he had a great groove. Here's Mystery Train. I like that groove...
If you had to, right now, off the top of your head, list your ten favourite blues tunes, what would they be? On a lighter note -- and can't we all use one -- Brian at World Gone Mad seems to be running a contest for the oldest Rock & Roll tune anyone can remember. OK, I was only 6 at the time, but Jackie Brenston and the Delta Cats' Rocket 88 from 1951, which later made the charts with Jerry Lee Lewis' cover is it for me. That's the one I remember and Jerry Lee still makes me fire on all 8 cylinders....

So how about songs which mention specific makes or models of automobiles in the title? You've probably already thought of some but let's make this challenging - NO CADILLACS! Galaxie 500 - Reverend Horton Heat Rocket 88 - Jackie Brenston (the Ike Turner Band) Terraplane Blues - Robert Johnson Hot Rod Lincoln - The Twangbangers … and for something really obscure… The Chevrolet [...]
