Three From Voiceprint

I’m in full-on catch-up mode at the moment, after the Christmas and New Year festivities and a totally manic couple of weeks in the nine to five (that doesn’t show any signs of quietening done any time soon), with some press sheets to write and mail-out, a book proposal that just needs a little bit of tidying up, another that really needs working on, and the festivals book which needs a...

Gong: 2032

Forty years have passed since Gong united in Paris, one of the cultural aftershocks of the city's student riots in May 1968. 2032 brings them back from the future and splashes them down in the instrumental jam-band scene that they originally helped create with their unique blend of progressive rock and jazz instrumentals, experimental electronics, eastern/western fusions, and self-depreciating humor....

Gong - live at the HMV Forum, Kentish Town 27/11.09

A packed Forum ejoyed sets by The Steve Hillage Band and Gong. Hillage's band played a half-hour set, and were joined by Daevid Allen, Gilli Smyth and Theo Travis as Gong. Both bands were very loud, choosing to rock out rather any hippie noodling. In addition, to the loudness there was a blinding visual and lighting show. It's good to see a band with members in their 70s playing with as much energy...

My night with Gong

That's right - Gong. With the Steve Hillage band as support. At the Picture House in Edinburgh. Having seen Yes last week, I'm obviously working my way through the bands whose logos I used to have etched on my schoolbag. I wasn't quite sure what to expect but have to report that it was all rather marvellous. Firstly, Steve Hillage. Now, I last saw him when I was a 17-year-old in 1979. And yet, 30...

Gong: Bristol 19th November 2009

It was at the Academy, an OK venue I think, not too big and with a good view of the stage. Unfortunately they don't allow photography inside, so no pics I'm afraid. Gong have basically got a classic line-up back together and they have a new album too - which I posted here a while back. The touring line-up is (I think) Daevid Allen - voice, guitar Steve Hillage - guitar Gilli Smyth – voice, space...

Gong - the new album 2032

Amazingly, the Pot-Head Pixies are back from Planet Gong in their Flying Teapot and they are touring in support of their new album 2032 I am going to see them in Bristol on November 19th. It is pretty much a classic lineup too, even Steve Hillage is back. Even more interesting, Hillage's own band is playing as a support act to Gong themselves. Anyway, fresh from Radio Gnome is the new opus City of...

This weekend I’ll mostly be listening to… System 7

Still talking about prog – sort of – three weeks in. System 7, successor, in a sense, to 1970s progressive band Gong, with both Steve Hillage and Miquette Giraudy of the latter both members. And perhaps one of the very very few examples of a successful crossover from 70s rock to dance and electronica (I [...]
