Should I publish non-complimentary reviews?

I don’t like everything I get sent but I tend to just review the CDs I like. It seems unfair to give a band a bad review when they are unsigned or on a small Indie label - but different if its Colplay. So should I publish reviews like the ones below? It’s a great cover [...]

You write the reviews: Evita, Opera House, Manchester

I'd always felt bereft at missing the original staging of Evita. Age-burnished memories of David Essex's superb version of "Oh, What a Circus", and a lasting impression of a charismatic Che Guevara with his wonderfully cynical smile, and a hatred of the current "Any Dream with Maria" telecasting obsession, left me underwhelmed at the prospect of seeing Seamus Cullen in the role. There is something...

That'll Be The Day (reposted by request)

In 1972 David Essex/Ringo Starr made the film "That'll Be The Day" on the Isle of Wight. Billy Fury made a cameo appearance in the movie as "Stormy Tempest", a 50's holiday camp ballroom singer, more or less reflecting his own image from the early days. The movie premiered in West End in April 12th 1973 and was a huge success, as was it's soundtrack album which spent 7 weeks as No. 1 on the charts....

My Life - One Enormous Drama

Well, really it's not, but I love to take the chance whenever I can to borrow a line from a musical and attribute it to something vaguely relevant that's going on in my life... On Thursday night Xfe and I trecked all the way down to Wimbledon to the New Wimbledon Theatre to see Aspects of Love , my all-time favourite musical . It's the same production that I saw at the High Wycombe Swan theatre in...

Once Upon A Time In The West Midlands

Earlier in the week I started off playing Judas Priest's album 'Angel of Retribution' so I felt it apt that I end the working week with Priest's 'British Stee' that is a quality album...........oh I remember playing and playing and er, playing Judas Priest's 'Metal Gods' (taken from the 'British Steel' LP) in a biker cafe somewhere in the West -West Midlands way back when and way off the route North...

Night at Opera for Essex

IN was in the 1974 film Stardust that David Essex gave one of his most memorable film performances. Thirty years later, and that magical stardust powder still seems to be in plentiful supply.

The Orb – Rescue Rooms, Thursday May 15.

It's hard to believe that The Orb have been a going concern for the past twenty years. These days, the band is essentially a vehicle for founder member Alex Paterson, plus whatever collaborators he has happened to gather around him. On this tour, Alex’s sampling and live DJ-ing is augmented by Fil Lump on assorted computer gadgetry, Keith York on live drums, and an MC called Eric. Given the music's...
