Bucketfull Of Brains 73 out now

Bucketfull Of Brains 73 is finally upon us. It features Lucky Soul, The Drones, John Wesley Harding. Achievements In Sound , Rob Symmons, Roky Erickson, Peter Holsapple, Big Star, along with all the usual stuff. As always a great read from cover to cover. My contribution this issue is one I'm really thrilled with. Achievements In Sound is the band monika used by none other that Gino Nave who back in...

MP3: Ryan Trevor – “Blue Mornings”

Ryan Trevor – “Blue Mornings” Ryan Trevor is a mysterious musician from New Zealand who, back in 1977, privately pressed an LP of homespun bedroom titled, appropriately enough, Introducing: Ryan Trevor. One would think a record like this would be lost to the ages, but one would be wrong. Because Galactic Zoo Disk/Drag [...]

For a first album and new artist trying to break into the business at this time (1977), it is refreshing and bold to even do something like this without...

Drake’s Take: New Releases 07.14.21

There’s been so much going on lately that I’ve let Drake’s Take fall into arrears once again. Some of you may recall that a little band called The Dead Weather released a new album a couple of weeks ago. -ed. Drake’s Take: New Releases 07.14.21 Jack White’s latest project, The Dead Weather, headlines this otherwise thin week, [...]

Now Downloading: New Releases 07.14.09

Jack White's latest project, The Dead Weather , headlines this otherwise thin week, which also features the latest from The Most Serene Public , New Roman Times , Baby Teeth , and a great compilation from songwriter Emitt Rhodes . Playlist: New Releases 07.14.09 The Dead Weather - Horehound Stream / Purchase [mp3] Between his work with Loretta Lynn and The Raconteurs , I've found myself preferring...

Emitt Rhodes

The long lost recordings of Emitt Rhodes from 1969-73 have just been collated and re-issued (on Hip O Select). Highly recommended for fans of McCartney influenced power pop. I think his story could make a great magazine feature (hint, hint). He has not released an album since 1973 (although allegedly working on one now), giving up after appalling experiences with his record company (check wikipedia...

Guitarist Drake Levin dead at 62

CHICAGO, July 8 (UPI) -- Drake Levin, a blues musician and former member of the rock band Paul Revere & the Raiders, has died at his home in San Francisco. He was 62. The Chicago Tribune said his longtime friend and former fellow Raiders member Phil Volk confirmed Levin lost his long battle with cancer last Saturday. The Idaho native, who was born Drake Maxwell Levinshefski, was with the Raiders...

Emmit Rhodes Collection

Just FYI : Among the cult legends that populate the margins of contemporary popular music, the story of Emitt Rhodes remains one of the most compelling. Compared by fans and critics favorably to the likes of Paul McCartney, Emitt Rhodes was arguably one of the most overlooked and underappreciated pop-rock singer-songwriters of the ‘60s/’70s. Finally getting his due, Hip-O Select is proud...

Emitt Rhodes – The Emitt Rhodes Recordings (1969-1973) (Hip-O Select/A&M/Geffen)

It’s easy to be skeptical about the quality of an artist whose advocates tend to run toward the breathless. But Rhodes lives up to the hype.

Emitt Rhodes Orphaned Music

I saw a photo of Emitt Rhodes at If Charlie Parker Was a Gunslinger : The Heretofore Unmentioned #62 . I don't understand the significance of that title, but it reminded me of one of my favorite albums, a 1970 LP called Emitt Rhodes . I no longer have that album, and I'd re-buy it if the CD didn't cost $39.95. You couldn't listen to that album without thinking Paul McCartney. Rhodes played all of the...

Hooks ‘N’ You: Dave Dill, “Follow the Summer”

Pity the publicist who offers up an exaggerated sense of their artist’s sound. I’ve been offering up some semblance of music criticism since I was a senior in high school (Great Bridge HS, class of ‘87, thank you very much), and believe me when I tell you that there’s nothing worse than getting a press release [...]

Review - Hopeful Monster 'Metatasking'

"I've got a paid vacation and I'm headin' for the sun..." Some cats got in touch and say "Hey! We think you might dig our LP!" and of course, I was left mutterin' into my chest and grumblin' "What the...

Jim Boggia: Misadventures In Stereo

To call Jim Boggia's Misadventures in Stereo a smashing power-pop success almost seems like damning it with faint praise; that is, if you think the term “power pop” only encompasses a stylistic breadth that starts with the Raspberries and ends with the Romantics. However, if your definition extends instead to the somewhat more singer-songwriterly realms of Aimee Mann, Michael Penn, Matthew...

Bart Davenport joins semi-acoustic live music showcase

It's been said of the East Bay's Bart Davenport that he's "a troubadour who wears his passionate love of West Coast pop on his sleeve." Songs by Emitt Rhodes, Harry Nilsson and Paul McCartney are his touchstones; his fourth solo album, "Palaces," on the San Francisco-based Antenna Farm label comes Sept. 9. His promoters say, "The album balances a sunny vibe with a streak of...

Two Minutes Forty Two Seconds

I, like Kevin at So Much Silence , wanted to know which songs in my collection were "the perfect length" after reading this funny Morning News article.
