I just love creating a slipstitch heel, particularly in handpainted yarn. Perhaps I am simple, but I love watching the color variations emerge as the heel flap grows. Yep, I am turning the heel on the first Halcyon sock. Excitement abounds! By the way, I sent a whole scad of patterns to Sheri last week, so (as I [...]
I once wrote an article about the 50 greatest conservative rock songs, and probably more people have read it than anything else I've written, and that even includes my profile of George Nethercutt. Anyway, I still hear about the rock songs, and last night a friend emailed me something I hadn't seen before: Graham Parker's response to appearing at #30 on the list. From Kate: I've loved your music since...
BACK IN TIME By Graham Parker You stop in the old cafe where you used to play pinball And look for the air-raid shelter but it’s gone and the cafe seems so Small and all the gardens that had trees and stolen apples Now have small businesses flourishing in cinder blocks Then they will call your name and hand you a gold watch Then they will call your name but it doesn’t sound like much And you’ll never...

I hadn't seen Parker since Squeezing Out Sparks days, when he played with the Rumour in a cruddy rock theatre in Long Island. Calderone Concert Hall on Franklin Avenue in Hempstead, ca. 1979? If so, I have that concert on cassette (yes, I'm that old) from good ol' WLIR. Breathtaking does not come close to describing it. CCH was quite the place back then: saw Elvis Costello, Talking
This post made me pull out the Parker Anthology from 76 to 91, Passion is No Ordinary Word, which is missing a couple of goodies ("Nobody Hurts You") but does have his cover of I Want You Back and also Mercury Poisoning. Saw him in Boston in the 80s with the Rumour and will never forget how he flipped over the microphone at the end and held it way above his head to sing the final notes--we all fe
Saying Graham Parker is not quite like Marshall Crenshaw is like saying -- um, it's Monday morning here, so i'm a bit slow -- but be assured, it would be some comparison that would slam your precious little Crenshaw right in his mouth! Anyway, Parker's stuff that he recorded with Providence RI's the Figgs -- particularly 1997's live Last Rock and Roll Tour is vital, bracing stuff, a diamond amo...
I hope this means that you and your guitar are on speaking terms! Me & mine have been mostly avoiding each other since my solo show at Eschacon in Philadelphia. So much so that when asked to be a part of a Townes Van Zandt tribute show last weekend, and told that the song I wanted to do (that I play well) was already taken, I sang this song
Jesus, Roy, I might have known you were a Graham Parker fan. Excellent post about one of the best singers and songwriters out there. I've caught GP the last four or five times he's been to Cleveland so I was surely at that sparsely-attended show of which your friend spoke. The crowds at his shows may be small but they're loyal and knowledgeable, and each time I've seen him GP played and sung
Parker's recorded career has remained amazing for those of us who've continued to follow it (I'm especially fond of his Bloodshot release, Your Country). Glad to see you rediscovering him . . .
Isn't that the most wonderful thing about singing, though, how it elevates stuff that on the page looks pretty weak tea? Read a lot of lyrics and you come away thinking, "wow, whatever happened to that ol' time songwriting?" a la Lileks, but hear the delivery and it's like a punch in the mouth. For me at least.
1. Patti Smith, "
Ask the Angels
."
Lots of New York Punk on this list, each track different. Patti was the poet laureate, a great live performer, and a bit crazy. Her band was learning how to play, and in their case, the move was useful.
2. Ramones, "
Judy Is a Punk
."
Speaking of learning how to play, the video link here is astounding.
3. Joan Armatrading, "
Love and Affection
."
