Recap: Greg makes one of his occasional treks to the studio for the beginning of the show and proceeds to turn an astonishing shade of red over the mention of Tampa Bay Buccaneers Tight End Jeremy Stevens. What would follow would become no less than radio gold.
The American surf-rocker Donavon Frankenreiter, 35, had always wanted to capture his love of the ocean and the surf in his music – but without it sounding too naff. Now he feels he has managed to merge its essence on his new album Pass It Around in songs such as "Mansions on the Sand", a collaboration with the singer-songwriter Grant-Lee Phillips, of Grant Lee Buffalo fame.
From Crackdown, written in 1996: “Terrorism terrify tear the truth in two Seeks to paralyze weaken turn the screws But only cowards could create the OK bomb ‘Cause no bomb is OK when there can be no calm And in the heat of crackdown all is silent While the voice of power over roars condemns the songs of Innocence and finally it’s [...]
Well, London called once more and this time I got the order to head on down to the 100 Club to see Terry Hall and Friends, with the slightest of chances that this could be the much talked-about Specials reunion....
I've been meaning to post on GRANT-LEE PHILLIPS for quite some time now. No particular reason why it has to be today, but why the hell not? I'm going to go ahead and ignore his last two albums, which, frankly, were pretty damn dull. These other, older tunes are much more effective at showcasing his top-notch vox. Feel free to revel in them. GRANT-LEE PHILLIPS on MySPACE . [ MP3 ] "Mona Lisa" [2004]...
The Stars Hollow Troubadour was a staple in the rich fabric of Gilmore Girls. The Troubadour, played by Grant-Lee Phillips as himself, appeared in 19 episodes of Gilmore Girls between 2001 and 2007. Grant’s first appearance was on "That Damn Donna Reed", and his last appearance was for "Hay Bale Maze". During his stint on [...]
Hi all. I’m guest-posting for Jeff today. When I was probably about 13 or so, my Uncle Mark made a series of mixtapes for my family that I’ve tried to reconstruct here. He was a big fan of Irish music, so it seemed appropriate to post this as close to St. Patrick’s [...]
I sat down to review last night's Band of Horses gig for whom The Cave Singers opened, but it seemed wrong to write about that live set without first giving an assessment of The Cave Singers’ debut album, which has been glued to the CD player in our kitchen for about three weeks now, having [...]

Back in the day I had an awesome tape just like this that had on Side A 2 songs by Cetu Javu, a bad recording of Grant Lee Buffalo's Mockingbirds, and 10 snippets of the local DJ dedicating songs to...
This ‘Daily Digs’ comes after a mini vacation and includes the delightful blend of funk, reggae, soul and dub from the Black Seeds and the amazing acid jazz of Fila Brazillia (the absolute gem entitled “The Big Dipper” makes this rewarding in itself). Other notable artists include Aerosmith, soul legend Curtis Mayfield (his debut ‘Curtis’ [...]

I usually welcome these weeks that look quiet, but there's the catch - it looks quiet for most but good music listeners will immediately find the nuggets hidden in the mid-summer release doldrums. For this week, Grant Lee Buffalo's reissue of Fuzzy , an album that I've long wanted and, since it's been out of print, I've never picked up, and Suzanne Vega's new album Beauty And Crime fit the bill nicely....
