In the Book Notes series, authors create and discuss a music playlist that is in some way relevant to their recently published books. Before I read Janis Ian's Society's Child: My Autobiography, I have to admit not being familiar...
Former Jam and Style Council frontman Paul Weller releases his latest solo effort, 22 Dreams, stateside tomorrow, a disc that features guest appearances by Noel Gallagher, Graham Coxon, and others. Other albums I can strongly recommend include the Avett...

. His voice is completely distinctive and new. It doesn't really fit any traditional mold and I thought I was alone in thinking he's the male version of Joni Mitchell, but I read that comparison on his ITunes bio. Perhaps if Nick Drake, Janis Ian and Liz...
Another thing I have learned over the years is that sometimes you can't jump right in and write a story when you have the first inkling of what it's about. Sometimes, it helps to write down some notes and then stick them in a file and wait until they set deep roots. You can always add more notes, after all, as the yoccur. I haven't been able to blog too much the last little while as I've been on the road and feverishly trying to make progress on a few projects. But I wondered just now if any of you caught the SNL tribute to George Carlin last night of the first episode ever, which Carlin hosted? I had a couple reactions: First, the show seems to have started very poorly and haphazardly. How did it succeed to a second...
I’m watching Saturday Night from October, 1975, and I can’t believe how awful George Carlin is. Don’t get me wrong. I love George Carlin. He just sucks in this show, as does most of the cast. I guess George Carlin got much better with age and “Shit, Piss, Fuck, Cunt, Cocksuckin’, Motherfucker, tits” was an [...]
It's both a very cool and a very sad thing that "Saturday Night Live" this week will re-air its first episode ever, because it was hosted by George Carlin. The sad part, of course, is that Carlin died June 22 of heart failure. NBC is bringing out the 1975 show that started it all (at 11:30 tonight) as both a tribute and a bid for ratings.
This weekend SNL re-reruns its premiere episode from 1975 in memory of its host, the late great George Carlin. You also get Janis Ian, Andy Kaufman, and Billy Preston's amazing afro. Over at WFMU's Beware of the Blog, there's a...
