As the final member of the Jimi Hendrix Experience kicked the bucket recently, it's timely to pose the question: whither the perception of the black man in rock music? Forty years after Hendrix's heyday, there still seem to be two main options, neither of them ideal. Rock too hard, and you're accused of being an Oreo: funk too funkily, and people don't consider you rock at all.
