As I'm sure half the known and 2/3 of the yet to be discovered universe is aware now, salesforce.com had an outage on January 6. It was due to a memory allocation failure in the main servers and it whacked the failover to back up servers too. It was manually fixed. It was 38 minutes and it was back in action. The number of transactions on that day and the next day were the same (177,000,000 each day)....

I saw The Day the Earth Stood Still today for work, and I thought it actually was a reasonably entertaining movie. I had seen the original on Netflix--it's nicely shot, but pretty slow, parts of it make no sense whatsoever (Klaatu learned English but didn't learn about money? Gort easily takes out the two soldiers assigned to guard him, and so the Army responds by guarding him with...two other soldiers...

"From the time I was little I loved watching movies about aliens. Years after I saw "The Day the Earth Stood Still," my dreams were filled with steel-noggined guys who spoke in detached, tinny voices as they ordered the world to submit. They didn't scare me, well, a little, but they were just so many dots on my mom and dad's black and white TV."

We go to the movies for a lot of reasons: to laugh, to cry, to be scared, to escape. However, the best movies can enlighten and challenge us; by the time we leave the theater, if we're luck, we may just learn something. With that in mind, we at RT...

The filmmakers gave Klaatu powers that are predictably demonstrated through pricey special effects that do not sustain dramatic momentum.

It sounded perfect. The AMC movie theater at First Colony Mall was offering The Day the Earth Stood Still in IMAX format. What better way to see Klaatu the alien and his big robot Gort operate as they try to...

I have a plebeian's taste in movies that has served me well through the years. While others groan at the cliches and struggle to work out the logic, I just think the alien guys and the explosions are cool.

By making Klaatu in the remake of “The Day the Earth Stood Still” emotionally naïve, the writers make him subject to earthling tears that would have cut no mustard with the Klaatu of old.

Last night we watched The Day the Earth Stood Still on Netflix. And today we went to see the new remake of it. Having seen both of them, so close together, I can definitely say that I liked the original much more than the modern remake. This is not to say that the remake is crap… I thoroughly enjoyed both of them. Keanu seems born to play the part of Klaatu. His vague, wooden, detached delivery seemed...

In my December movie preview, I lamented that there was no destination movie for my family’s annual Christmas Day movie excursion. The film that ultimately won the prize was The Day The Earth Stood Still, with a general consensus that it was the only movie no one vetoed. My expectations were low, and the film still didn’t hit the mark. The film involves an alien named Klaatu (Keanu Reeves) that comes...

The Earth continues to turn as the characters in "The Day the Earth Stood Still," a tailored-for- blockbuster remake of the 1951 classic of the same name, remain eerily immobile The original film, directed by Robert Wise, became a revered sci-fi cult favorite. That fate will probably elude this revamped, updated version directed by Scott Derrickson. Read the full story

I saw The Day The Earth Stood Still yesterday, and I actually really enjoyed it! I’d never seen the original (though it’s now wallowing around the 200s in my Netflix queue) so I couldn’t be enraged by any deviations from that version. I thought maybe Helen would enrage me, being one of only two female [...]
