James Taylor will release an album of covers, mysteriously titled Covers, on September 30th via Hear Music. Taylor will perform renditions of songs that span several decades, including a pair of Leiber-Stoller tunes (”Hound Dog” and “On Broadway”), Leonard Cohen’s “Suzanne” and even the Dixie Chicks’ version of “Some Days You Gotta Dance.” “An album [...]
Which one is Burman? Click. Salome by British artist Barry Burman (1943-2001)[1] via Trevor Brown[2] . Trevor notes Burman’s work as a personal inspiration after reading Peter Webb’s The Erotic Arts and makes a comparison to the work of Graham Ovenden. Burman committed suicide in 2001. Notes of the previous days: 2008 August 1 Valter of Surreal Documents has [...]
For too many years, Jerry Lieber and Mike Stoller were the songwriting team that everyone loved and no one recognized. They were the guys who wrote and composed 1950s and '60s chart-toppers that included "Hound Dog," "Love Potion No. 9" and "Yakety Yak."
One of the most famous songs ever is the Coaster's "Yakety Yak". It's timeless. There is not a generation that does not know it. (at least I don't think there is) It was written, produced, and arranged by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller for The Coasters and released on Atlantic Records in 1958, spending seven weeks as number one. The song is a "playlet", a word Stoller used for the glimpses into teenage...
Peggy Lee did a very different version of “Is That All There Is,” a song written by Leiber and Stoller. In fact, Leiber and Stoller positively kvelled over Peggy’s version. Cristina’s version… not so much. In fact, they sued her and her husband’s record company, Ze, when it came out in 1980. It was taken [...]
You may recall us having talked up a rather large record sale in Tribeca back around the holidays. For 10 glorious days the folks at ARC rolled out all their vinyl duplicates and sold them for absurdly reasonable prices, and we were able to walk out of there with a treasure trove of near-mint condition records ranging from Graceland to David Lee Roth's Skyscraper for about 3 bucks a pop. Well guess...
… of Jerry Leiber. He’s 75. Leiber and partner Mike Stoller are in the Rock and Roll and Songwriters halls of fame. By the time they were 20, in just three years of working together, their early songs had been recorded by a collection of true all-stars in the rhythm and blues genre including [...]
[From the archives. Originally posted at my place January ‘07.] Donald Fagen’s The Nightfly is a modern musical masterpiece. It is a quintessential concept album, never wavering from the theme of a teen-aged boy’s (and a maladroit jazz geek at that!) fantasies circa 1960. Part autobiographical, the album captures the essence of the late 50’s [...]
We last visited Peggy Lee in Market Reaction to the Fed: Is That All There Is? Then Let's Keep Shorting. * Here's Barron's: By RANDALL W. FORSYTH "IS THAT ALL THERE IS?" Peggy Lee sang those words nearly four decades ago, but they were written by the improbable team of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, two white guys who took to rhythm 'n blues in the early 'Fifties. Then, they wrote "Hound Dog" for Big...
Well, it's Friday and you know what that means. Yes, my Oriental amanuensis Hop-Sing and I are off to the coast of South Africa (specifically, to the mouth of the Chalumna River ) for a fishing trip on some filthy rich wog sultan's yacht with Dick Cheney . I'm not sure of the details, but I've heard tell that Dick is bringing his trusty shotgun for an old-fashioned coelacanth hunt . Anybody have any...

Well, it's Friday and you know what that means. Yes, my Oriental amanuensis Hop-Sing and I are off to Phoenix, Arizona to attend the first annual Cindy McCain Just Say Yes! Foundation dinner. I'm not sure what exactly Ms. McCain's cause is, but I'm sure it's something wonderfully positive and I'm proud to be a part of it, however small. Of course, that means that posting by moi will necessarily be...
