Rocking cartoon drums in front of a green screen, a camera-shy Stephen Malkmus and friends apparently miss their cue to stop [...]
Originally released in 1997, Brighten the Corners marked the completion of Pavement's transformation from lo-fi indie oddities to ... well, to slightly higher-fi indie oddities.
Stuart Berman • PITCHFORK • JUMP TO MOST RECENT POST For a band that often seemed be on the verge of a commercial breakthrough, Pavement made all the right moves– they just did them in the wrong order. More retiring than Slanted and Enchanted, more cohesive than Wowee Zowee, Pavement's fourth album, 1997's Brighten the Corners, struck a radio-friendly noteone that purists, weaned on Wowee Zowee's meandering yelps, greeted with some suspicion. (It didn't help that lead singer...
photo via stephen malkmus [myspace] Once upon a time there was a band called Pavement that gave college indie-rock geeks (before being an indie rock geek was a primetime drama character trait) something to obsess over in the nineties that wasn’t grunge. Now, of course, they have faded into the [...]
