Afternoon Palate Cleanser: "Can We Still Be Friends?"

We can't get it out of our heads now that we mentioned it in conjunction with the Todd Rundgren show tonight at the Palace of Fine Arts. It's a good song, and it's been covered by the likes of Robert Palmer and Mandy Moore . It also figured in a somewhat infamous threeway sex scene from Nip/Tuck a few seasons back. Above, a simple concert version from 1978, with Todd alone at the piano.

Your Daily Dose of Christmas

Kicking off a new feature that will run for the next twenty-five days or so: a daily video or music clip related to Christmas. So let's kick things off with the incredibly gooey and silly song from Love Actually . Here's "Christmas is All Around", sung by the wonderful Bill Nighy in the actual music video they shot for the movie (obviously an homage to Robert Palmer). So if you really love...

Boston Rocks Halloween 2009 at TT The Bear’s and Church

It’s an annual tradition for Boston bands to perform Halloween shows covering bands they love or just feel inspired to cover for the night. This year I got some great performances recorded on video: John Powhida and Chris Cote as Robert Palmer, Preacher Roe as The Replacements, The Luxury as Duran Duran and The Lights [...]

Mondegreen est Mort

Ye Highlands and ye Lowlands, Oh, where hae ye been? They hae slain the Earl Amurray, And Lady Mondegreen. Yes, this is a "Mondegreen" or misheard lyric (laid 'im on de green) which of course only works in this instance when said in Black and White Minstrels patois. I was reminded of the concept when Richard recently mentioned a Paul Simon Song about Chromosones and found several web sites...

Micro Kid

Some great telly last night on BBC Four, with Electric Dreams, narrated by Robert Llewellyn, followed by Micro Men. Unlike the rest of us kids of the 60s and 70s who had to endure the painfully slow and expensive evolution of technology, the family featured in Electric Dreams woke up each day to find that their technological world had advanced by a year, with new gadgets delivered to their door. Sure,...

Revisiting the 80s

Speaking of the 80s, husby and I spent a reasonably large portion of the weekend watching the top 500 80s songs on the foxtel. No idea on what basis the list was made (sales, weeks in the chart etc) but it was too much fun not to share. The memories brought back by so many of these songs were in turns funny and cringeworthy! No images in this post but those of you who were around in the 80s will be...
