Album: Karin Krog, Joy (Meantime)

"Mr Joy", the opening song of this 1968 album by Norwegian vocalist Krog, still sounds startlingly contemporary, like a newwave folk-jazz project referencing Robert Wyatt and early John Martyn. It'sco-written by AnnettePeacock; Jan Garbarekplays tenor sax and ArildAnderson's dextrousdouble bass-pluckingrecalls Richard Davis'swork on Astral Weeks.Acouple of tracks, withKrog's voice distressedthrough...

This weekend I’ll mostly be listening to… Ultramarine.

We’re still linked to prog, however tenuously, for here is Ultramarine. Lovely is an odd word to use, but really, how else to describe a ‘pastoral electronica’ or ‘ambient house’ band, consisting of Paul Hammond and Ian Cooper from (natch) Canterbury, that merged with folk (and prog by extension) by having Robert Wyatt sing for [...]

Music exists within silence

The five seconds of silence that precede the music on any ECM album may be the most important statement a record company could make. The pause is a recognition that music exists within silence; only by acknowledging it can a listener become wholly involved. Manfred Eicher is the author of that silence, and of the silence that appears to surround all the recordings produced on his remarkable label....

GARY HIGGINS - Seconds

GARY HIGGINS Seconds Drag City FOLK / AMERICANA LP Something of a cult figure within psych-folk circles, Gary Higgins released the legendary Red Hash in 1973, and Seconds is the first album he's released since. Several of Higgins' collaborators from the seventies return for this long-player, which no doubt has much to do with the fact that this sounds so much like he's carrying on from where he left...

Many projects, recruitment ideas await Oconee County Democrats

The Oconee County Democratic Committee met and welcomed new member Herman Smith this wet evening at the Governmental Annex on Highway 15. It was not as packed as our last meeting, but the talk of the turnout was lively and well informed through out the evening. The fact it was going on opposite of the Jeannette Rankin Dinner with Melissa Fay Greene was noticed as well. Republican Sheriff Scott Berry...

"A Tapestry of Influences"

"Being a white English South African means being schizophrenic. It means not having a firm foot in any culture, but also it means being priviledged to be exposed to many wildly diverse aspects of social life. A tapestry of influences." Kalahari Surfers -- biography Formed in 1982, the Kalahari Surfers was essentially a string of studio projects realised by Warrick Sony at Shifty Studios (Operating...

France Superieure and the London Jazz Festival

This is one of my more obscure links. Sorry about that. Ever since I started playing the clarinet 43 years ago this month I have noticed two words on most reeds I have used (and the ones I've discarded too.) Those two words are FRANCE and SUPERIEURE They came to mind when London's French Music Bureau sent me an email with the super-efficiency one expects of the superior country which designed both...

Magazine

Just home from seeing Magazine at Royal Festival Hall - they were fantastic. Ahead of their time in the day and still sounding fresh and really tight. Whole band on top form - Howard doing is usual inter song esoteric banter and Barry's bass playing!! Night made even more special by seeing Robert Wyatt. Almost literally bumped into him after the gig as I headed for a post gig beer. Lovely evening...

Cult Heroes: Blue Nile recommendations

Thoroughly enjoyed the latest issue with the Cult Heroes feature a particularly enjoyable read. Naturally, I was moved to try out some of those featured. I found a suitable Robert Wyatt thread so I know where to start there, but nothing on The Blue Nile. Can anyone point me in a direction? They're a group I've been meaning to check out for a while, but have never known where to start. Recommendations...
