Atlanta: The Kinks, 1980

It was a great joy to see the Kinks in excellent form. Their impact runs deep into other bands and artists, no question. Ray Davies, the brooding genius, his brother Dave with the frenetic guitar, the rest of the band. The Fox Theatre in Atlanta, seating fewer than 5,000 people, a majestic venue right of One Thousand and One Nights. The show: October 20, 1980. The price of admission: $9.75. My sister...

Waterloo Sunset

The influence of the Kinks goes far and wide. "Waterloo Sunset" (1967) is a good example. Not only is the song widely saluted as a major achievement in songwriting by other songwriters and critics, it's also been covered by bands and artists as diverse as Def Leppard (hear below, from 2004), David Bowie and Billy Bragg; let's also not forget that Ray Davies' charms captivated Chrissie Hynde....

Rock movies aim to break X Factor's stranglehold

A new wave of biopics and rockumentaries – including films about Blur, the White Stripes and Muse – leads the attack on "the blandest of the bland" A backlash has begun against the stranglehold that television talent shows have on the British music industry. Wayward at the Elephant & Castle, West Moors

We visited our local Dorset pub twice today, first to devour steak pie, now home-made, and later to see the group Wayward. It comprises amplified acoustic guitar, electric bass guitar and electric drum kit, with the drummer providing the vocals. At first they attracted no applause due to numbers fading out rather than ending. Once we understood this we led the applause and others followed. Our favourite...

Pligrimage to Waterloo II

As Jodi ponted out in response to yesterday's post, ABBA had a big hit with "Waterloo" in 1974, applying the battle's outcome to a romantic disaster. As Mark (Walking Man) noted, the battle's name has become synonymous with defeat. Waterloo connects to so many things it may equal the Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon. Here's a shot of Waterloo Station taken by my Dad in 1992, not too far from the...

Saw Emily Play (a bit)

Went to the 'Missing Believed Wiped' music special session at the NFT in frosty London yesterday which featured a few rare music TV clips of which the most egaerly awaited was Pink Ployd's appearance on Top Of The Pops in 1967. In the audience seemed to be the owners of many of London's independant record shops, music nerds (yours truly), music quizmasters and Victor Lewis Smith. a friend said it...

Welcome to Music Town

This will definitely be filed under those posts that nobody reads, but we’re tickling our music geek gland here at Toxic Towers by building our own Music Town, just like the city that Jefferson Starship built using only rock’n’roll. So no more introduction is needed to this spiel. Here goes… Streets • Positively 4th Street - Bob Dylan • Across 110th Street - Bobby...
