Sydney Dispatch 6: You, the Living

I have been holding off writing about You, the Living by Swedish director Roy Andersson, because of a paralyzing uncertainty over how to fully express how singularly bizarro and spellbinding it is. But with so many films elbowing for...

New Oasis Demos Suggest They've Been Listening To The Beatles [Leak Of The (yester)day]

ARTIST : Oasis TITLES : "Nothing On Me," "I Wanna Live A Dream," "Stop The Clocks" WEB DEBUT : May 6, 2008 ONE-LISTEN VERDICT : Wow, Oasis are seriously changing up the game on our asses. You'd think this was the Dukes Of Stratosphear or something, the way they've suddenly started taking on Beatle-isms! "Nothing On Me" mixes brash guitars and snide, Lennon-esque vocals from Liam Gallagher that plead...

Psonic Psunspot

I love me some XTC. I also love their alter-ego The Dukes Of Stratosphear. They only ever released two records - 1985's 25 O'Clock EP and 1987's Psonic Psunspot. Only if You Consider Round Funny

Kelley Stoltz's records remind me of my grandmother's house. There's warm light hitting the best corners, mismatched furniture everywhere and a oddly comforting musty smell is unavoidable It just feels right. That comforting feel is what really appeals to me...

Birthday Salutations Terry!

Today is the birthday of former XTC member Terry Chambers , born this day in 1955 in Swindon , Wiltshire. I know I speak for all the contributors to PowerPop when I say that XTC has made some of the most sublime, transcendent pop music of the past twenty years and Terry's guitar work was an integral part of their sound. Some of my favorite recordings of the band come from their lysergic alter ego The...
