Songs For The Dog and Duck review

Songs for the Dog and Duck The Dog and Duck is a real boozer in the heart of Soho. It doesn’t actually have a jukebox but Saint Etienne’s Bob Stanley has chosen it as it was one of the after work gathering points for staff from the nearby Heavenly label. Through his excellent sleeve notes he tells the tale of a night in it, the beer and snacks consumed, the tracks played on its mythical...

Saint Etienne Present Songs For The Dog And Duck on Ace Records

The members of Saint Etienne can certainly pick a tune, especially when those tunes are from the Ace Records archive, so Saint Etienne Present Songs from the Dog and Duck looks a winner from the off. The second in a...

Soulful Weekender

Forgive me if I’m playing catch up here but I have only recently heard of Bettye Swann ( via this excellent blog ). I was immediately entranced by the reserved power of her singing and the sweetness of her voice. Bettye seems to have a reluctance to explode into the histrionics in the way that many of her contemporaries and many, many more since do. Also the simple pared-down precise music seems...

The Soul Of Money Records volume 2

Soul by label: LA based Money records, soul from the 2nd half of the 60's and 1973 (the label had several phases of existence, see booklet). A few previously unissued tracks and no really big names, save for Bettye Swann perhaps, or hits. A mix of everything: ballad style works, up-tempo poppy tracks and a funky organ instrumental (the TKO's ?!?). Music quality varies and you can tell which are

I Remember Hip-Hop

“Every generation has its own unique form of expression. Nothing really changes, only the people change???we are the reflection of those that came before us.” It was this particular statement that truly stuck out for myself. There is such truth squeezed in-between those words. It [...]

Jukebox Joints Update

I've been posting one track a week (from a 45) on my music blog and it seems to be coming together quite well. I have a whole bunch more stuff to put up there but one a week keeps me out of mischief. So far people as diverse as Talking Heads, Bettye Swann, Georgie Fame and Jeffrey Lewis have made it into the Jukebox. Today sees the inclusion of BMX Bandits.

WEDDING TUNES REVISITED

Two bits of personal trivia. 1) I have never, in the 15 years I've been a DJ, DJed a wedding. The reasons are partly logistical (I don't own speakers, lights or an amp), mostly personal (I've heard enough groom/bride-zilla stories to want to steer clear). In fact, at my own wedding, we didn't even have music, something that surprised many of my friends but seriously, it never occurred to me (note:...

S3,E18: 6/05/06 (Britta Phillips and Dean Wareham, The Helio Sequence, Playdate, Ballboy, Bettye Swann)

First up, former Luna bandmates and New York City residents Britta Phillips & Dean Wareham did "Night Nurse" from their album L'Avventura ( Amazon ). They have a new album coming out soon, so you know you'll hear something from that before too long. There's also a new documentary about Luna called Tell Me Do You Miss Me ( Amazon ) coming out on DVD soon. Next was Portland's The Helio...

It is now as it was then

… They didn't say anything. The man and the woman moved closer to each other, The round table between them. The stove was still on and burned the empty pot. She started to get up. One of them shot her. She leaned over the table like a schoolgirl doing her lessons. She thought about being beside him, being asleep. They took her long gray [...]
