DEXY’S MIDNIGHT RUNNERS - “Geno”

(#457, 2nd May 1980) The insight that took Kevin Rowland from punker to star was that the DIY aesthetic which formed some part of punk’s appeal – the idea that inspiration could and should trump technical ability – could as easily be applied to soul. If soul was a passion that emerged from within, why [...]

Free London - Saturday 20th - Sunday 21st September

Yeah, we know, things in the void have been sparse. The other largely reformist, potentially money grabbing and very time consuming website has been sapping most of the energy and what follows is a blatant repost of this weekend’s free stuff. the void will be back, Grumpy Old Anarchist is threatening to make an appearance this [...]

Beer and soul

More on the pub dearth in the Borough . Lewisham's Forum of Conservation and Amenity Societies is seeking to secure more protection for traditional pubs under threat from developers. TMFC says all power to their elbow. Apparently over the past 20 years, the number of pubs has gone down from 163 to 70 throughout the whole of Lewisham. That's over half. That's like losing a leg. The borough needs places...

Herbie Goins & The Nightimers - No.1 In Your Heart

American singer Herbie Goins found himself in London after leaving the US armed forces in 1963. In 1964 he formed a band called the Nightimers & set about bringing soul music to the UK. Herbie's first documented recordings that I can track were a guest spot as a featured vocalist on Alexis Korner's [...]

You Know The Old Saying - Nothing Good Ever Happened At A Potbelly's During Bye Week

(I was unsuccessful in finding a decent pic of FSU's Geno Hayes, so this snapshot of Dexy's muse Geno Washington will have to suffice) It's been an amazering week of tasering in the Sunshine State. And yes, I know amazering isn't a real word, and that's why Andrew Carter writes for the Sun-Sentinel, while I’m merely [...]
