The sad passing of Teddy made me think of how much I love any song with a gruff soul singer laying down the law to the laydeez.. A particular favourite here is Lou Rawls 'I'll See You When I Git There' He gives full voice to his feelings about what is going to happen this evening at his 'castle' 1. He'll be there when he 'git's there but 2. 'Be ready' 3. Remember he's 'worked hard' 4. He's ready for...
To say that Sam Cooke died at the height of his career would be a gross understatement. Gunned down at 33 inside the Hacienda Motel in Los Angeles on December 11, 1964, in what was determined to be a justifiable...
PBS THIRTEEN ’s American Masters celebrates the wonderful world of music game-changer and definitive soul singer Sam Cooke in Sam Cooke: Crossing Over, airing Monday, January 11 at 9 p.m. on PBS Popdose : Maybe it’s because I’ve read Peter Guralnick’s comprehensive 2005 Sam Cooke biography Dream Boogie: The Triumph of Sam Cooke that the newest entry in the generally wonderful...
Maybe it’s because I’ve read Peter Guralnick’s comprehensive 2005 Sam Cooke biography Dream Boogie: The Triumph of Sam Cooke that the newest entry in the generally wonderful PBS series American Masters, Sam Cooke – Crossing Over, which debuts on PBS tonight, seems a little bit skimpy to me. An hour simply is not enough to [...]
It’s the first three-man extra large edition of the “Show To Be Named Later” in 2010 as Michael “Fantasy Camp” Kossett and Luke Lapinski join me to discuss what’s going on…and of course to venture off on to numerous tangents as well. For instance today, just some of the avenues we travel down are [...]
Nashville singer-songwriter Doug Hoekstra, on his 1999 release Make Me Believe, said “Sam Cooke Sang the Gospel.” How right he was on so many levels. Cooke put the spirit of the black church into popular music, creating a new American sound and and a popular gospel of love with songs “Good News,” “Wonderful World,” “You [...]

This will definitely be filed under those posts that nobody reads, but we’re tickling our music geek gland here at Toxic Towers by building our own Music Town, just like the city that Jefferson Starship built using only rock’n’roll. So no more introduction is needed to this spiel. Here goes… Streets • Positively 4th Street - Bob Dylan • Across 110th Street - Bobby...
Another great soundtrack from John Powell. Whilst I prefer his score for Ice Age 2: The Meltdown this one is still just as good. My only major problem is that the music has been split up into too many tracks. 32 of the 44 tracks are under 2 minutes, 22 are under 1 and a half minutes, 17 are under a minute, and 8 of them are under 30 seconds in length. It works fine if your listening to the soundtrack...
ok, so in the last few days ireallylovemusic has done the festive late night choir thing in the shape of leeds rockers, eureka machines, the smooth 60s soul of lou rawls, so how about the only other xmas groove that gets an airing every year ? that’s right, the phil spector xmas album, which as [...]
this is, quite simply my favourite christmas song ever. throughout the way too short (can someone out there make a 10 minute edit of this as opposed to extending some supposedly ironic 80s tv commercial jam) 2 minutes 11 seconds of perfection the velvet smoothness of lou rawls who is clearly at the top of [...]
Hope you enjoyed the intermission. Tonight’s three under the tree also are for cool cats. They’re from a guy who was a pretty cool cat himself. I came to know Lou Rawls from the TV variety shows I watched with my dad in the late ’60s and early ’70s. He hit the charts later in the ’70s, [...]
I did a radio show for London Fields Radio that is now up for you to download in their podcast section . The theme of my show was the depression, money and capitalism. A surprisingly light hearted selection of records by people like The Staple Singers, Lester Young, Lou Rawls, Lavern Baker and Tony Bennett. And midway through you get the rare opportunity of hearing me sing a cappella... On The Sunny...
Dressforms and bitchery! First off: HOW FUCKING CUTE ARE THESE LITTLE GAY FASHION PIXIES? More wardrobe changes than a Cher concert! Bow down! We have to give them props. That is a killer work space. We liked the twist that they had to buy all their fabric for their line at once. That notions closet could be fun or it could be a petri dish of resentments and backstabbings, which, come to think of...
It's not New Yorker Stefani Greenfield of Scoop boutique fame or Dsquared's Dan and Dean Caten from the snooty European fashion establishment filling the Simon Cowell mean judge role on Bravo's "Launch My Line," which premieres tonight at 11 PST....

Has anyone heard the new Bill Champlin album "No Place Left To Fall? His solo music is fantastic! I got turned onto his music when I went to see Chicago recently (he just left the band after 28 years to pursue his solo career). Guess he’s been around a while as I found out that he co-wrote (and won a Grammies for…) “After the Love is Gone” by Earth, Wind & Fire and “Turn Your Love Around” by George
