Jerry Wexler: 1917-2008

A song comes on the radio. It’s one of those songs that has defined your life. It could be Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, or Wilson Pickett. If your romantic life has been like mine, “When A Man Loves A Woman” has figured into it a time or two. A smile crosses your face, or maybe [...]

Wilson Pickett - Soul Dance Number Three (Atlantic 2412)

Soul Dance Number Three JERRY WEXLER 1917-2008 There was only one. As the last living link to the glory days at Atlantic Records passes before our eyes, please take a moment with me to reflect on a life well lived. An absolute giant of the 'Soul Era', I don't think you can imagine the music without him. His influence is still felt today, and he remained his wry and lucid self right to the end, providing...

Music That Moves Me, 60-51

60. Day Tripper-Beatles In some ways, quite anthemic. That hook is swiped often. Love the build on the bridge. I also have a great Wilson Pickett version. 59. All Day and All of the Night - the Kinks. This was probably the loudest song I remember as a kid. I love how the chords modulate. And the delicious guitar on the bridge! The theme was so compelling that Ray Davies ripped himself off on Destroyer....

Saturday I Go Out To Play

On a lighter note - pollworking is fun

On Sunday, I met the former saxophone player for Doug Clark and the Hot Nuts and Wilson Pickett. He came in driving a vintage Checy from the 1930s, with a HUGE engine dropped in the front of it. I also met a man today who registered and voted for the first time. He is 73, and I showed him my flyer of Obama and Hampton and he pointed at Obama and said, "that's the man right there. That's why I'm voting."...

Duffy - Mercy (Rough Trade)

TAKE a northern soul signature so distinct as Ben E. King's Stand By Me and a hook as familiar as Wilson Pickett's Mustang Sally and you'd hardly imagine you could rework it into something fresh and exciting.
