The opera world, always ravenous for talented, charismatic tenors, felt desperate hunger pains last summer, when Rolando Villazón canceled dates with an explanation that a health crisis necessitated a sabbatical from singing.

Album: Mahler/Cooke, Symphony No 10 – Wiener Philharmoniker/ Harding (Deutsche Grammophon)

Album: Boldemann/Gefors/Hillborg, Orchestral Songs – Von Otter/Nagano/GSO (Deutsche Grammophon)

Anders Hillborg's "...lontana in sonno..." is a soundworld of scudding strings and introspective horns.

Classical Recording's Potemkin Village

"One look at this week's charts and you'd be tempted to think that all is well in the classical dovecote and the doomsayers have got it wrong again. But check the bottom line and the gloom is unconfined. Insiders at Universal, which released [chart-topper Hilary] Hahn on the Deutsche Grammophon label, tell me she is selling no more than 500 CDs a week in the world's biggest market."...
