VA: Classic Blues from Smithsonian Folkways (2003)

A living and dynamic tradition, blues is forged in hard times but powerful enough to bring on the good times. Legends such as Lead Belly, Memphis Slim, Big Bill Broonzy, Elizabeth Cotten, Sonny Terry, and Brownie McGhee, among others formed the "blues backbone" of Folkways Records. This compilation from the Smithsonian Folkways collection spans half a century and features Delta, St. Louis, Southwest,...

In the tradition

These old Folkways Records were very special to those in the New York City music scene that Dylan came upon circa 1962. He writes of meeting Cisco Houston at a party on Fifth Avenue down in the Village. Cisco was a compatriot of and fellow traveler with Woody Gutherie. The real deal. [...]

Sam Gesser

Spending a half-century in the Canadian cultural industries is more a calling than a career. The man whom Harry Belafonte once touted as the best impresario in the world heard the call early and followed it, the rest of his life being fairly evenly divided between preserving folk culture and presenting artists for the public to enjoy.

Sobbing along with Pete

Last night, very late at night I watched the PBS American Masters special on Pete Seeger and I cried. I cried buckets. I cried for our country that is no longer interested in getting together to protest this ridiculous war. I cried for the earth that is becoming polluted beyond recognition while the governments look on and wring their hands in dismay. I cried for my family that doesn't have

Michael Hurley - "Ancestral Swamp"

Michael Hurley - "Light Green Fellow" (Gnomonsong 2007) Michael Hurley – Ancestral Swamp / Gnomonsong I’ve been searching for just the right way to place the minimal folk of traveled songwriter Michael Hurley in context with contemporary music for a good hour now. I don't think it can be done, at least not snugly. Ancestral Swamp , the folk veteran's twentieth LP and first for the Devendra Banhart-helmed...

The Times I've Had: Mark Spoelstra

Mark Spoelstra was a major figure in the folk music scenes of Greenwich Village and Cambridge, Massachusetts, during the 1960s. Born in Kansas City, Missouri, Spoelstra was raised in California. He moved to New York City where Mark landed his first recording contract with Moses Asch and Folkways Records. While there, he played in coffeehouses and at various clubs as a duo with Bob Dylan. This song...
