Reggae label Greensleeves Records & Publishing announced that it just signed reggae-dancehall sensations Busy Signal and Gyptian, and hit-makers Shane “Jukeboxx” Brown and Llamar “Riff Raff” Brown (no relation) who are currently dominating the reggae and dancehall charts worldwide.
Producers, managers and artistes in the reggae music industry have expressed shock and distress at the recent release by VP Records that they have made an offer to buy out competing record company, Greensleeves.
Presenting 30 sterling hits stretching from the fading cries and laments of the last days of roots reggae to the deviousness of the latest dancehall tune from the yard, this 2xCD label compilation is another reminder-- as if one were needed-- that Greensleeves is not only one of the premiere Jamican labels of the past three decades, but one of the most dependable full stop.
To name a reggae record label after an English sonnet most commonly associated with King Henry VIII is odd enough. To turn that enterprise from a small shop in a London suburb into one of the most iconic names in black music is stranger still. But to say you have achieved that status not because of Bob Marley, the undisputed all-time ruler of reggae, but in spite of him is truly extraordinary.
