Nikka Costa’s Pebble To A Pearl will be released on October 14, 2008 on Nikka’s own Go Funk Yourself Records in conjunction with the newly re-launched Stax Records Nikka Costa has always seemed to thrive on a certain sense of freedom. Having been exposed to a range of music genres as a child, ranging from 60s and 70s Motown and Stax records, to Chicago Blues, and being encouraged by her father to start gigging the local pub circuit whilst still in her early teens, it was clear to see that Dani Wilde was already well on her way to becoming somewhat of a special talent. When asked what made Dani decide to become a blues singer she...

Wow! Never heard of Leigh Jones until I got an e-mail about her last week, but this woman sounds promising. Based on this track and the fact that she had Berry Gordy (founder of Motown Records) and Al Bell (Stax Records executive) helping to guide her through the creation of her debut album, Music In My [...]
A friend of mine mentioned Jerry Wexler to me. I said who? Here’s what he wrote me - Bad week for R&B, what with Isaac Hayes and Jerry Wexler dying. Wexler was THE reason that Atlantic Records and Stax Records were different from Motown. Twenty essential Jerry Wexler recordings 1. Professor [...]
The death last Sunday of Isaac Hayes draws the final curtain over one of American music's most innovative and groundbreaking institutions, Stax Records.
As someone who’s been a Stax Records fan for years (they were at least as great as Motown, if not as well-marketed), I was saddened when I learned from Kevin D. that Isaac Hayes had died. There’s a pretty good remembrance of him here.
An obit from Sipp , who knows whereof he speaks (unlike most of us). His piece led me to this oldie (Is that Steve Cropper playing? And how did they book Booker T and the MGs for that aerobics class') which is not by Hayes but was from Stax records:
LOS ANGELES, CA -- 08/11/08 -- The Farmers Insurance Group Angel City Classic team is deeply saddened to learn about the untimely death of incomparable singer, songwriter and music industry pioneer Isaac Hayes. "Isaac Hayes will forever b..
Let us pause to celebrate the Hot Buttered Soul that was Issac Hayes , who passed away on Sunday at the age of 65. The Stax Records in-house arranger, songwriter, producer and hitmaker. A compicated man, a man who exploited Blaxsploitation to give us the Oscar-winning, blackalicious theme from "Shaft." And we can dig it. Issac Hayes, "Theme from Shaft" Wattstax , 1972
The Stax Records and Concord Music Group family lost a great friend on Sunday when soul music giant Isaac Hayes died suddenly at the age of 65. To the world he was Black Moses, Ike The Ripper and, later, Chef from TV's South Park. To the rest of us who had the extraordinary opportunity to work with him in recent years, he was just Isaac. He was humble, unpretentious and refreshingly down-to-earth....

Hayes was one of the main creative forces behind southern soul music label Stax Records, where he served as both an in-house songwriter and producer with partner David Porter during the mid-1960s. In the late 1960s, Hayes became a recording...
I can’t go to sleep. Isaac Hayes – Rolling down a Mountain Side Isaac Hayes – Tough Guys theme Isaac Hayes – Do Your Thing Isaac Hayes – Precious Precious Isaac Hayes – The Look of Love Isaac Hayes – Theme from The Men (instrumental) Stax Records is my favorite soul label and studio. Don’t get me wrong, Motown is pretty much pop-perfection and Willie Mitchell’s classics for Hi Records are unfuckwitable...
