Can a play be a form of journalism ? There's a hot-off-the-presses production being staged at North Seattle Community College that attempts to answer that question in the affirmative. Titled, "It's Not in the P-I: A Living Newspaper About a Dying Newspaper," the play was cobbled together by six Seattle-area playwrights and put before an audience in less than eight months. The lead author...

My wife and I returned from our brief trip to Texas last night. We took advantage of Seattle's new Link Light Rail train to get to and from Sea Tac International airport. Fortunately, we live within easy walking distance of a bus stop, so taking the bus to Westlake Center in downtown Seattle was simple. At Westlake station we boarded the Link Light Rail train for Sea Tac and about 30 minutes later...

Here they come. Their message is on the side of a public bus near you. I have linked a picture sent in by one of our readers. The "Virginia" signs coincide with the Freedom From Religion Foundation's national convention being held in Seattle this weekend. Obviously their signs are a play off the now famous answer to a question posed by an 8-year-old to the old New York Sun newspaper which...

Even less surprising than the revelation that the Ivar’s undersea billboard was an elaborate hoax, is the revelation of how far the Seattle Times actually has that stick shoved up its collective ass : Times Executive Editor David Boardman says that while he can appreciate the initiative behind the marketing ploy and had suspected it was a hoax, he was distressed that Dorpat, whose “Now...

When I saw the headline in The Seattle Times Newspaper “10 Steps to a 30 minute garden” my first thought was “Oh no, not yet another of those quick garden makeover fixes”. There have been so many of those television programmes where gardening gurus have been called in to do a makeover in anywhere from [...] Not Another Garden Quick Fix? is a post from: Gardening and Wildlife...

Microsoft Corp. on Wednesday said it is cutting 800 more jobs in addition to the initial target of 5,000 layoffs the company announced in January. With the new announcement, the total number of the broad cutbacks, the first major layoffs in the company's history, will be 5,800, Lou Gellos, a Microsoft spokesman, was quoted by The Seattle Times as saying. According to a report on the newspaper's website,...

Here's something we haven't seen lately practically ever: a major boost in resources for women's sports from an American daily newspaper that covers a not-especially-stellar team. You're probably familiar with Jayda Evans, who covers the Storm along with college women's hoops for the Seattle Times; she also wrote a book about the Storm after they won it all in '04. While most WNBA beat reporters covered...

I’ve been meaning to take a closer look at the the Seattle Times’ post-PI circulation numbers, but Crosscut’s Chuck Taylor has done much of the hard work for me. But here’s what we know for sure: Today’s Seattle Times average weekday circulation of 263,588 is, by my calculations, 52,085 less — 16.4 percent less — than the 316,673 combined circulation of both...

A hat tip to Jimmy at McCranium for catching the Seattle Times in perhaps its most bizarre editorial conceit ever. The emphasis is mine (well, Jimmy’s actually), but… WTF? After vowing to block the tunnel, McGinn flipped last week following the City Council’s unanimous vote in favor of it, and said, “OK, I still dislike the tunnel but I won’t block it.” Or words...

I was going to post this as an update to my previous post , but the point is too important to leave as an afterthought. I’m hearing that the Seattle Times endorsement of Susan Hutchison came directly from publisher Frank Blethen himself. This is his right, of course, not because he is particularly wise or well-informed or civic minded, but because he owns the newspaper. He signs their paychecks,...

As expected, the Seattle Times has endorsed No on I-1033 , as will most every other newspaper in the state. But while it is a responsible editorial, and fairly well argued, I couldn’t help reading it with an involuntary roll of the eyes, for some of the common misconceptions the editors attempt to correct, happen to be ones they’ve worked damn hard to create. The Times now argues that Washington...
