The practice of wearing clothes decorated with pearl buttons originated in the 19th century. It is first associated with Henry Croft; an orphan street sweeper who collected money for charity. In 1911 an organised pearly society was formed in Fincley, north London. Croft died...

Gordon Brown is going to embarrass himself amongst the Commonwealth countries by trying to get them to reform their constitutions in order to please the narrow-minded socialists in his party. What am I talking about? I'm talking about reforming the monarchy and the Catholic discrimination laws and so on. Why does nobody get this: it is not a right to become the King or Queen. It is a privilege. The...

View Poll: History Inspired by last night when I asked Alex to pick out a medieval This Sceptred Isle for me. He read out the dates on the box and I said sleepily "So, Elizabeth I and James I probably" and he was very impressed that I actually knew that from the dates. I asked him which century Henry VIII reigned in and he found it hard. So am I weird for knowing this stuff, or is he unusual...

is the work of two best friends (Alethea Harampolis and Jill Pilotte) who share a love for flowers that are just a little bit wild, things that are made by hand, and containers that are old and sweet. The flowers are locally grown whenever possible, and always fresh and seasonal. The studio can accommodate local deliveries, weddings, private parties, and events.

Enough: Breaking Free from the World of Excess is the title of a fascinating book by John Naish in which "enoughness" is viewed as "the tipping point, beyond which getting more of anything makes life worse rather than better" ( Enough is not enough , 23 November). In his "post-more" scenario there is life "beyond shopping, work, acquisition and status", but...

Dear Editor: Ramin Setoodeh made my skin crawl. He can turn down the volume all he wants but the people who don't want him to marry his boyfriend or serve in the military aren't going away. The volume isn't the issue for them. If he ever gets to their party, they'll still hate him. Be careful who you sell out to get what you want Ramin. It still could bite you in the butt.
