House of Sand and Fog by Andre Dubus III You know when you're watching a movie and the bad guy is just the creepiest bad guy ever and you don't even want to watch the movie anymore because he creeps you out so much? (reference: Little Dorrit) And then someone always says that that's a sign of really great acting? Well, if the same is true for books then Dubus is a friggin' genius because the writing...

Lara's newest YA novel, The Sweet Life of Stella Madison , made me smile, laugh, and cook macaroni and cheese. Seriously. While I was revamping her website at zeisgeist.com and while she...

This is actually a retrospective book review, because I was thinking about how I am in a bit of a funk reading wise and won't be able to contribute to my book review blog posts.. then I remembered that I read this before I left for England. The House of Sand and Fog by Andre Dubus III is an intense, emotional roller coaster ride of a read that quickly goes from bad to WORSE. A heartbroken gal is in...

Andre Dubus III has a gift for characterisation, for getting inside the heads of his downtrodden Americans, but it is not enough to save this unwieldy and uneven novel. Effectively, there are two novels battling it out within these 500-plus pages, one about the state of the American underclass, the other about the 9/11 terrorist attacks, and Dubus never reconciles these threads.
