Big Idea, or a bunch of small ones hidden in the details?

Steinbeck is of the generation that arrives just after the Muckrakers,Upton Sinclair, Frank Norris, Sinclair Lewis, who thought that fiction was something of a sociological/anthropological tool in getting at the skewed relations between races and classes in a capitalist economy. Some larger truth, discovered by a focus imagination, could get beyond supposition and provide the correct vision for reform....

Attention, Frank Norris…

John Bull (England) as an octopus of imperialism (American cartoon,1888); source: HistoryMike For more images of this provocative sort (and discussion thereof), see Vulgar Army, “an informal study into the use of the Octopus as an (often unreflective) metaphor in propaganda and political cartoons, and [of] the intersection of the political with popular culture.” As we [...]

Comparing Norris and Tolstoy

Just as in War and Peace history has its own dynamism and logic, pushing people forward in a relentless fashion, so too in Frank Norris' The Octopus rancher and railroader alike must serve the impersonal forces of supply and demand. Remember Shelgrim's words to Presley? -"Men have little to do with the whole business. Can anyone stop the wheat? Well, then, no more can I stop the road." All...

Jess’s Book Pick for March: McTeague by Frank Norris

Frank Norris is in the same camp of writers as that of Theodore Dreiser. Published in 1899, this book addresses greed like none other. Norris died at the age of 32, unfortunately. I open a review of McTeague with the following: 'Readers might not ...

Book Pick For March: McTeague by Frank Norris.

Click here to see my book selection over on M&C this month. This is one of the best books about greed I've read. I have a review that can be found here . Norris is lumped beside the Dreiser camp, though Norris died young--at the age of 32. Check out Dan's poetry essay here .

Condo for Olds Gets Flack for Selling to Youngs: It's no secret the condo sector...

It's no secret the condo sector isn't doing so hot as of late. But have sales been cold enough to forgo the law? Well, uh, yes -- at least in the case of 1314 Polk Street. The Frank Norris Place...

And Now We Do (Have An Answer), It Wasn’t (Possible)

As we wrote 14 months ago: What most people already know about Frank Norris Place (81 Frank Norris): it’s a new development of 32 one bedroom “luxury condos” on Polk; it’s been selling for about six months; and it...

Book Review: McTeague by Frank Norris

Norris makes it so you can believe people like this would exist, and such is the sign of an excellent writer. Readers might not know a whole lot about Frank Norris due to his short life (1870-1902), but he is part of that school of modern style writers that include Theodore Dreiser and Stephen Crane. Annoying purple prose still lingering from the days of the Victorian Era? You will not find that here....

The Pit: A Story of Chicago by Frank Norris

The Pit is a 1903 novel by Frank Norris. Detailing wheat speculation and the trading pits at the Chicago Board of Trade Building, it was the second in what was to be the Epic of Wheat trilogy (the first being The Octopus (1901)). The third book, Wolf, was never completed. It served as the basis for A Corner in Wheat a 1909 short film directed by D. W. Griffith which tells of a greedy tycoon who tries...

Taking Time

Someone I don't know that well, but moved to North Beach right around when I did, Jackson West, has been blogging about North Beach on Curbed SF. He says, On a bad day, it's like living in an off-brand corner of Disneyland. On a good day, reading Frank Norris in a claw-foot tub older than your [...]
