Here’s a VERY interesting discussion we had at lunch today here in Boystown, with more than a few people at the table fans of alternate history works by the likes of Harry Turtledove and shows like FOX’s old Sliders series (not, as Oprah believes, about those little hamburgers she has by the dozens at “snack [...]

If you haven’t already noticed I am taking a bit of a break, sometimes we need to just relax after getting home from work and thinking about politics doesn’t really relax me right now. I mentioned this on Facebook, but I was thinking how awesome a Harry Turtledove like video game would be. It would be [...]

One of the great tragedies of our world is the fact dirigibles went out of fashion after the Hindenberg disaster and rise of the jet engine. There’s a great alternate history book called “The Two Georges”, written by Harry Turtledove and, of all people, Richard Dreyfus (he of the opus belonging to Mr. Holland and [...]

Is Harry Turtledove ? Compare the similarity in output to Patterson . I just noticed that Glenn Reynolds received a copy of Turtledove's second book in a quasi-alternate history series he's been working on. Turtledove shines when he's applying what he knows. Even if the Videssos cycle wasn't artful prose, the books had plots which moved along, while his historical, Justinian , had incredible source...

I'm still working on the fiction page portion of my website revamp , and now I'm running down anthology links for books my stories have appeared in. I'll put them behind a cut, with the exception of the shiny-new PASSING FOR HUMAN , edited by Michael Bishop and Steven Utley , which is here and which in addition to my "Cooking Creole" also has Jessica Reisman 's incomparable "Nights at...

I finished reading Canticle . It's a post-apocalyptic novel set in a Catholic monastery a few centuries after a nuclear war reduced the world to Iron Age-level technology. This is a dynastic novel that follows the monastery's inhabitants throughout the ages, as humanity gradually rebuilds. Miller has written a carefully-crafted work, where each word and phrase, particularly in the dialogue, is thoughtfully...

The alternate history fiction of Harry Turtledove has been reviewed and discussed with some regularity over the years on this blog. As a friend of John's, and at his recommendation, I did read one of his novels, Guns of the South several years ago, and found it enjoyable enough, although I didn't follow-up on it at all. Therefore, when I was at my public library last week selecting books to take on...

I have a lot to say about this issue, very little of it about the stories, none of which I recommend (though nothing is actually bad, except for Ian Stewart's pun-trocious "Missing Link"). I got this issue because I wanted to read Frederik Pohl's novel The Coming of the Quantum Cats and I thought this issue had an earlier novella version of the novel. Instead, it has the first 25% of the...

Three books this week, two publisher, one of which I just read.... By Blood We Live edited by John Joseph Adams ( NightShade Books Hardcover 08/17/2009) – This is the final book of the ARC I received back in June and it is another ‘definitive’ anthology from JJA. Adams is developing into a smart anthologist, publishing definitive anthologies like The Living Dead and Wastelands . Here,...
