One title on the list:Malleus Maleficarum by Heinrich Krämer and James SprengerIn 1484 Pope Innocent VIII, whose name must now be counted the paragon of misnomers, deputised two Dominican friars to go on a fact-finding mission

Haul of Books: Friends of the Library Edition

There was an enormous book sale here in Gainesville over the last few days and I thought I’d let you all know what I got (a lot of stuff, actually). Next time, in April, I don’t think I will be going quite as all out, mostly because I don’t have as much need for a lot of books anymore. I intentionally went this year trying to find things to use for my research, and now I’m only...

Quote of the day

James Morrow in response to White House Communications Director Anita Dunn's citing Mao Tse-Tung as one of her favorite political philosophers: the Obama White House is rapidly becoming a big tent for the sort of cranks who set up card tables on the fringes of growers' markets and pass out hand-xeroxed fliers.

MARK TAPSCOTT: Does Obama’s communications chief know the bloody truth about Chairman Mao? If no…

MARK TAPSCOTT: Does Obama’s communications chief know the bloody truth about Chairman Mao? If not, what’s she doing in the White House? Related thoughts from James Morrow. “One of the first rules of public speaking is, ‘be careful whom you quote’. If you’re a reasonably educated human being, therefore, it should be obvious [...]

It is being published by TOR.com , and you can get it at their online store http://store.tor.com/book/9780765324498 as well as at the usual online booksellers. I posted the table of contents a little while back on the ditch, but here it is again: " Shoggoths in Bloom " by Elizabeth Bear...

Serendipity Fail

I'm old enough to remember Spitting Image , the satirical puppet show of the 1980s. At the time, everyone watched it. You knew you'd made it when your puppet popped up on Spitting Image. In fact, it's no exaggeration to say that more than one person's image was reformed (or perhaps simply deformed) by Spitting Image. The snooker player, Steve "Interesting" Davies , acquired his middle name...

A More Moderate Evening

My last panel got out at ten, and very few people are in the hotel bar (many more Delta parties tonight). After thorough deliberation and a glass of wine, sanity won out (given that Curtis & I have a 9am thing tomorrow--a fencing demonstration!) and we're back in our room. Our Con has been such that we haven't even been inside the Delta (party hotel) yet--we'll probably get there tomorrow. Today...

Happy Birthday to Us, Part 6

Today marks SF Signal's 6th Birthday! Yay us! :) It's been another fine year here at SF Signal. Not only are we having fun (with minimal harm to the environment - the people around us are another story) but we must also be doing something right: just last week we passed 5,000 subscribers to our RSS feed. That's a nice number. Of course, 10,000 is twice as nice, so everyone hack into your neighbor's...

The Last Witchfinder by James Morrow

I loved this book, but some may not do, as the book itself "talks" to the reader at intervals throughout the book. These passages are quite clearly the book talking, but I can appreciate it may un-nerve some. The main character, Jennet Stearne is a very strong willed girl/woman, who has a grasp of many things that are usually the province of men at the time. I think the bumph probably tells...

Woolly Mammoth

The hands above belong to James Morrow . James is crafting another of his fine pieces of jewelry from pieces of genuine woolly mammoth tusks. James obtains the tusks from the northern areas where the mammoths roamed up to about 10,000 years ago. Climate change at the end of the last ice age is thought to have caused their extinction and tusks are often recovered from the tundra, especially during gold...

The Philosopher's Apprentice by James Morrow

The Philosopher's Apprentice was a random library selection, simply because it was on the returned books shelves at the library and the description appealed. The book starts with Mason Ambrose storming out of his PHD viva, where he is defending his thesis, Ethics from the Earth. Soon after this, as he is ruminating on where his life will take him next, he is approached to take on a job tutoring a seventeen...
