I think my favorite movie from a Jim Thompson book is Coup du Torchon, by Tavernier. Coup du Torchon is great -- it really French-i-fies the story without losing a drop of its essence, and Philippe Noiret is brilliant -- but don't count out The Grifters. It may be the

Nom de Plume -- watch what you ask for. Spielberg's Artificial Intelligence: AI was based on a script Kubrick never filmed. I think my favorite movie from a Jim Thompson book is Coup du Torchon, by Tavernier. It's based on Thompston's novel Pop. 1280 but is set in a French colony i Africa and stars Philippe Noiret in a great performance. http://www.imdb.com/t

Weird Trailer for Casey Affleck's 'Killer Inside Me'

I read The Killer Inside Me about 25 years ago, and in general I'm an admirer of the work of pulp novelist Jim Thompson . His most recognized works are probably that title, The Killing (later turned into an early Kubrick film), The Getaway , and The Grifters , released as a film over 10 years after his death. I heard about him while growing up in Oklahoma, because that's where he was from. The Killer...

Reply to The Plot to Purge GOP Moderates

corn1971 posted a reply: The IL Republican party went through what the national party is now going through. For decades the Governor's office was held by Republicans, moderates like Jim Thompson, Jim Edgar & George Ryan. George Ryan had been the Sec of State before becoming Gov. A license for bribes scandal would hound him, ultimately leading him not to run for re-election and a prison conviction....

The Killer Inside Me Sales Trailer: Michael Winterbottom Does Sex and Violence and Desperation

I've really been looking forward to footage from Michael Winterbottom's adaptation of the Jim Thompson novel The Killer Inside Me. I'm a massive Thompson fan, and adaptations of his novels have about a .500 average. (I'm the guy that doesn't like The Grifters much; I infinitely prefer a movie like Tavernier's Coup de Torchon.) The cast here seems to be on the money -- Casey Affleck as the duplicitous...
