Remember, remember, the fifth of November, and the inspiration for 'V For Vendetta'

On this day in 1605, Sir Thomas Knyvet, a justice of the peace, found Guy Fawkes in a cellar below the English Parliament building, involved in a plot to blow up Parliament itself. The day was later known as "Guy Fawkes Day" and served as an inspiration for Alan Moore and David Lloyd's graphic novel, V for Vendetta . Today the folks across the pond remember, remember the fifth of November...

Eight Years Later

Osama bin Laden is still at large. The best work of art about September 11, 2001 is still John M. Ford’s poem, “110 Stories.” Edward’s commentary, from 2004.

The Last Hot Time by John M. Ford

John M. Ford was a giant in the SFF world – having won pretty much every major award, including the Nebula, World Fantasy, and the Philip K. Dick Awards. He was known equally for novels and short fiction, and praised by writers like Robert Jordan and Neil Gaiman. The Last Hot Time ( US , UK , Canada , Indiebound ) was published in 2000, just missing most of the internet revolution and the resulting...

Writing on Reading: The Last Hot Time

Lately, I've been on a quest for urban fantasy that does not involve vampires, werewolves, or zombies. One book that fit the bill is The Last Hot Time by John M. Ford. The novel has a lot going for it: an original world, tight writing, and good imagery. Like all fantasies, it forces the reader to walk the line between mysteries of the world that are never explained and those that are explained

Corambis auctions

Okay. Here is the plan. I have decided to auction off all three of my ARCs. One will benefit the John M. Ford Memorial Book Endowment . One will benefit Scarleteen . One will benefit the Carl Brandon Society . As March 7th is the T-minus one month and counting anniversary of the official release date of Corambis , that is the day I want to take these ARCs to the post office and ship them out. Therefore,...

Corambis ARCs

John Scalzi has 10 things about authors he'd like you to keep in mind. To all of which, I say, "Hear hear!" and also "Ditto." On a not entirely unrelated note, the FedEx ninja brought me today three ARCs* of Corambis . Two years ago I auctioned off an ARC of The Mirador to benefit the John M. Ford Memorial Book Endownment. Given that Corambis --the actual book--will be out on April...

don't tell me life gets better

See, the problem with this writer gig is that nearly every book I read these days is written by somebody I know and like, and it makes me want to like the books as well. Book #5, John M. Ford, The Last Hot Time What a weird, brilliant little book this is. I think the end is a bit rushed and muddled, and I think Doc could have protagged a bit more (he does an awful lot of go-and-dying, and I would like...
