Mountain Magic : 01 Diamonds Are Forever - Eric Flint and Ryk E. Spoor Nathan is an elderly backwoods 'Cunning Man'. In an article on his website David Drake talks about the characters - and does say that yes, this is a Wellman influence/homage....

This is a classy bunch of stories of consistent quality. I have a reverse interest in yank hillbilly type stories, so the fact that these can hold my attention means they are very superior. Stories about a guitar slinging ghostbuster wandering where trouble leads him or looks for him, and helping where he can, asking for little. Highly recommended.
