November 18, 1964— Alan Alda and Robert Ludlum (in the image accompanying this post) reached the top of their professions within a year of each other in the 1970s, but a decade before the M*A*S*H star and the master of the paranoid thriller had collaborated on a far different project: the two-character comedy The Owl and the Pussycat , which premiered at Broadway’s ANTA Theatre on this...

A clutch of new films will cement Matt Damon's reputation as the hit of his generation. But that won't change this most reserved and politically committed of actors. Vanessa Thorpe reports Runners taking part in the annual Miami Triathlon this time last year were surprised to spot a familiar face crossing the finishing line. It looked very like Jason Bourne, the implacable, brain-washed hitman, who...

He never graduated high school. He laid brick and cinder blocks for a living. Sometimes he pointed out houses and other buildings he had worked on. He used to tell me, "I worked hard, very hard." He started reading seriously as a young boy. He knew a lot about history and geography. When I knew him he read mainly fiction. He liked most kinds of popular novels but especially ones that were...

**** The Tristan Betrayal by Robert Ludlum . Action/adventure. This is another of those authors whose books I generally enjoy, but I haven't gone out of my way to look for. Stephen Metcalfe is a spy-turned-ambassador, and he's called on to help stop a coup--communist hardliners threatening to overthrow Gorbachev's new government. Along with the present day story, we get flashbacks of Metcalfe's life...

No matter where you go on the planet you will find tales of the supernatural. Spirits, spooks and spectres are everywhere. However, there is one reclusive mythical creature that particularly sparks fear in literary hearts – the ghostwriter. They are the hired guns of the publishing world, paid to produce and then melt away unseen. Words for cash – no questions asked. The work is never-ending...

The State Journal has an interesting little story on a group of 20 students at the UW who are giving the Kindle digital book a test run. As far as textbooks for college are concerned, I wish I'd had one during my time at UW - of course, back when I started college in 2001 it wouldn't have been an option, heck the iPod didn't even exist yet, but I digress - if only for the fact that I wouldn't have...

Cinda contemplated what constitutes great American literature . Not being a professional writer, or a devout classicist, my literary consumption has been mostly popular stuff. Anne Perry, Robert Ludlum, Lois McMaster Bujold, Patrick O'Brian. I have read a couple of her recommendations, especially To Kill a Mockingbird. No two people being the same, of course I paused to consider what I would recommend,...

This will be old news for some, but I totally missed that Universal is making a fourth Bourne movie with Matt Damon. Though the series is based on the Robert Ludlum novels, the new film won't be based on a Ludlum title, but rather an original story. Tags: Bourne 4 Matt Damon movies
