Harper Collins has published a collection of children's book picks from over 100 actors, writers, artists, politicians, and activists. These are the books that made a difference to them, the books that changed their lives. I asked the employees at Book Soup for their favorite children's books, and these are the books we picked....some will be familiar, some have been forgotten and some are just crazy!...

I've always loved rhyming poetry: I love writing it, and I love reading it out loud (nigh unto performing it). Which means, naturally, that I adore Shel Silverstein. I even had an unusual obsession on Shakespeare as a teenager to the point of memorizing several key monologues. Not for a school assignment, mind you. Just because I liked it.Consequently, I've always been rather disappointed

I have never read Where the Wild Things Are , and yes I recognize the effort involved in such an undertaking is quite minimal. Of course, the ideal time to have read this would have been nearly three decades ago. The problem is that my parents were blissfully unaware of this story, instead I was more of a Shel Silverstein The Missing Piece sort of kid. With that said, I was able to see this live action...

Sandy Ploy has been getting lots of attention for her Iron Cupcake competition in Milwaukee. Here's a feature in a recent issue of Milwaukee Magazine . So I was thrilled (having blogged a bit about getting a cupcake store on Downer Avenue) to be asked to be the guest partner for this month's competition. Each entry this month is basing their cupcake on a book (or in one case, I believe, a poem). Five...

This week is Banned Books Week, a time to celebrate the freedom to read. There shouldn't be a need to have a Banned Books Week but unfortunately there are thousands of books that have been burned, banned and continue to get challenged by individuals, groups and governments that find them offensive. The books we read expand our minds, and make us the people we are. Books have always been an important...

Books for Breakfast - Book Reviews With a Twist (Free subscription) | 09/25/2009
Based on Marv Gold's lifelong friendship with Shel Silverstein, this memoir gives a glimpse of the mysterious man who lived a juxtaposition. He created art for Playboy and published children's poems. He wrote incredible songs ("Boy Named Sue") but did not have the voice to sing. He barely gave interviews, and when he did, he turned the questions back to the reporter. Do I feel like I know...

For a twist on the usual "name five people you'd like to have dinner with," the JPS Blog posted this question: Name five Jewish authors (living or not) you'd like to break the Yom Kippur fast with. Sarah's JPS Blog post listed Ayn Rand (The Fountainhead), Maurice Sendak (Where the Wild Things Are), Jonathan Safran Foer (Everything is illuminated), Philip Roth (Portnoy's Complaint) and Shel...

By now any Facebook users (which is pretty much everyone on the planet except Bill Gates , right') have probably seen this. The challenge is to list fifteen books you've read that will always stick with you; the first fifteen you can recall within fifteen minutes. This is my list - they're not necessarily the most profound books (check out #10!), but all of them made an indelible impression on me in...

The blood is up at The American Scene, as they single out the worst kids' writing. Who have they missed? Yes, yes, we all love Diana Wynne Jones , but what do we hate? A fiery debate is raging over on The American Scene about the worst children's books ever. Shel Silverstein's The Giving Tree gets a hammering ("Tree loves boy. Boy loves tree. Boy grows up. Boy exploits tree. Tree takes it all...
