Last evening I attended a tribute to the life of Albuquerque author, Tony Hillerman, who passed away just about one year ago. His daughter, Anne Hillerman, and son-in-law, photographer Don Strel, have just published a book celebrating the Southwest landscapes made memorable in Tony Hillerman's books. Everyone in attendance received a complimentary copy of this book, Tony Hillerman's Landscape . Anne...

The Poisoned Pen Bookstore hosted a special event on November 1, honoring Southwestern authors. Barbara Peters, owner of the bookstore, said that so many authors owe a debt to Tony Hillerman, and the celebration was a tribute to him, and to other authors who write about the Southwest. I had a wonderful chance to talk to Margaret Coel privately before the program. She chose not to do a big tour this...

The second or third time a book falls into my hands, if I didn't want to read it before, I pay attention. So I'm reading my way through a stack of books purchased for almost nothing within the last month at various thrift stores, found here near home or while on the road. I collect very few mystery series by particular authors in hardcover, and I read more mystery and science fiction than I decide...

I was glad to see that two of Patti Abbott's Forgotten Books today were John D. MacDonalds. Bill Cameron reviewed The Last One Left while Randy Johnson discussed Wine of The Dreamers. We've been talking about how quickly writers fade after their deaths. I still can't believe how John D. went from best seller and exemplar of the commercial American story to near obscurity (not to mention ignominy) in...

I like fiction, as entertainment and escape. while in college and even high school, I was saturated with "classic literature". I bet I read "Plato's Republic" five times for five different classes! After 300 credit hours, I do not read "classics" any longer! When younger, my favorite books were science fiction, a choice which prompted me to go into Aerospace Engineering...

Retirement looms. I'm in denial - watching old movies and ignoring my to-do list. With good movies, details remain fresh. I get two of Fellini's best mixed up - La Dolce Vida and Roma. Like Tony Hillerman novels, they have...

West Oversea , by Lars Walker ( Noble Novels 2009 ) has more than its share of magic, and at first, I thought Walker was cheating. Would the Eye of Odin that Father Aillil is asked to dispose of in approximately the Year of Our Lord 1002 become as troublesome a bauble as the Ring of Power that nearly up-ended J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle Earth? Would the blood and iron proper to a Viking saga take a back...

My reading has dropped back to about 2 books a week, and all the books I read this month were challenge reads. My reading was unusually heavy in mysteries, but I also got in a some travelogues, some history, poetry, fantasy and one brilliant modern classic. In the Top Mysteries Challenge, I read 3 books. All were good. *Earle Stanley Gardner: The Case of the Velvet Claws (murder mystery) *Ed McBain:...

The blurb on the back of the book says it’s “for fans of Alexander McCall Smith and Tony Hillerman.” The only things this book has in common with McCall Smith’s No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series are: a) It’s set in Africa. Ghana in West Africa is not too close to Botswana in South Africa, but [...]

Since I have read all of this author’s Navajo mysteries I was interested to learn more about his life. Hillerman was a World War II vet whose childhood during the Depression was spent in rural Oklahoma. A combat wounded infantryman, he saw battle action in Europe. College on the GI bill lead to his newspaper [...]
