As much as I think Elizabeth Dole is a bubble-headed, do-nothing, empty suit completely and totally out of her depth pretending to be a senator, I have clung to the small comfort that she is, at least, a mighty improvement...

( Photo: Remain seated, with your arms, hands, and legs on top of the cushion at all times. Enjoy your ride.) This entry marks the (belated) third anniversary of CHICAGO CARLESS. As is obvious, year four is getting started with a lot of changes. The most obvious are the totally re-designed layout and features of the blog. But they're only reflections of the most important change of all: my renewed...

Oh, sweet, sweet irony. Part of the controversial plan to move the Chicago Children's Museum to Grant Park will involve removing the playground there. A playground that's free for all to use as opposed to paying admission to a museum, currently at $32 for a family of four. For the kids that live in the surrounding high rises, that playground is their backyard and the only convenient place for them...

The Chicago City Council approved a plan to let the Chicago Children’s Museum build a new home in Grant Park, a downtown park that is protected from development. Much of the museum would be underground. With a 33-to-16 vote, aldermen supported Mayor Richard M. Daley, an ardent promoter of the plan, bucking the opposition of the local alderman, Brendan Reilly, and the tradition of giving aldermen power...

I'm in the Chicago City Council chambers listening to the Zoning Committee meeting. Committee members are questioning the museum architect already. Alderman Allen: Were you ever asked to develop designs for any other location? Architect: "No." UPDATE 1 Alderman Vi Daley (43): Asks how the museum would expand if needed. Architect: Can't expand. The architect has left the stage. Update 2 Chicago Park...

A Children's Museum move would leave gap If the Chicago Children's Museum pulls up stakes at Navy Pier, which is looking increasingly likely, its exit could create a significant gap in the offerings at the Midwest's busiest tourist attraction, observers say.

Alderman in site's ward can't kill deal The much-debated plan to build a new Chicago Children's Museum in Grant Park moves Thursday to the City Council's Zoning Committee, where the unwritten City Hall rule of "aldermanic prerogative" probably will be disregarded for one of the few times in recent memory.

CJ was entranced by the exhibit in the Chicago Children’s Museum where you could make a pizza on cardboard crusts with fabric pepperoni and mushrooms. So tonight I thought he might like helping me make a couple of pizzas for real. Now I try to be an autonomy-granting parent, so I went along with CJ’s [...]
