Alex Prager’s photographs

I was listening to the Brazilian singer, Gal Costa, when I first came across Alex Prager’s photographs, which provided the perfect collision of music and imagery. We asked the Los Angeles-based photographer a few questions about her process and influences. Are most of your shoots premeditated, shot on the fly, or a combination of both? ‘They all [...]

The secret diary of Mario Testino: What the world's most glamorous photographer saw

May 29 Fly into Düsseldorf to control the printing of an exhibition I'm having at Phillips de Pury Gallery in London this summer. Grieger is the only lab in Europe that specialises in large-format printing. You walk in and you see the work of Andreas Gursky and all the other German artists that I adore. I had to stand on top of a ladder to see them because they are so big; it's impossible to hold them...

Cycle girl: pimp my bike for lady-riding joy

I’m on a bike-buying mission. I want something with a pillowy seat and a lady crossbar that I can ride safely in heels and a short skirt. Taking my racing bike out in a pretty outfit is tantamount to standing on a street corner, lifting my skirt like the crazy crackhead hookers who come out on summer nights in my neck of the woods.

Pre-formed Chapel Hat Pegs for Peanutless Smugglers

Item – the other week I went to the Helmut Newton Collection to see an exhibit of paparazzi photos. I also wandered through the gallery showing Newton's personal effects, including a set of fake bosoms used in some of his portraits. Item – just wandered through Kauf Hof to try and buy a bra in metric for the first time, and came across this. The Wonderbra Just Nipples . It's a bra, with moulded nipples/areoli...

Helmut Newton: Capture Yourself at Topshop

With the Autumn Winter 2008 collections awash with uber-glam sophistication and fierce femininity, its no wonder that fashion-forward brand, Topshop, has teamed up with the Helmut Newton estate to showcase the controversial and influential photographer’s ‘Newton Machine’. One More Reason This Is the Best Fashion Store on Earth

Love it! Apparently Helmut Newton's position was that the best photographer was the subject herself, so he came up with this "machine" that allowed them to do so—a set-up Topshop is replicating at a whole bunch of stores across the...

Helmut Newton's Photo Machine is revived byTopshop

The Telegraph reports that Topshop has installed a self-photography studio at its flagship store at London's Oxford Circus. Interestingly, this "Photo Machine", which allows you to check your pose in a 6ft mirror before taking a snap, is the original 1970s invention of Helmut Newton - except the camera is now digital, allowing you to walk away with an instant printout.
