Robert Doisneau is probably best known for his famous The Kiss at the Hotel photo, but I like this — near surrealistic — one a lot, too. It dates from approx. 1971: The statue still exist, and those kids must now be in their forties. Via Vintage Photo | Discover dozens more Doisneau photos

Wigleaf has put together a top 50 list of (very) short fictions published online in 2007. I haven't read them all, but of the ones I have Martha Cooley's "Siena, Italy, 9 August 2007" and Elizabeth Gumport's "The Pool House" stand out. I also really liked Erin Fitzgerald's "Four Sieges" from the "long shortlist" -- in some of these stories, the voices can seem a bit samey when read back to back, but...

Popular legend has it that the couple in the famous Robert Doisneau photograph (you know, the one everyone had up in their dorm rooms in college) didn't' even know each other. He's just back from the war and they're really glad the Allies won. That's the story, anyway, but it's not true. (It was actually taken in 1950, when the two were lovers.) But that doesn't mean Paris isn't a really great place...

Left: photo by Robert Doisneau, 1946. Right: today’s concierge. Soon they’ll be history. They take out the garbage, sweep stairwells, keep a trained eye peeled for trespassers and listen to gripes, gossip and heartaches, especially among the elderly living alone. But the inimitable “concierge” — the apartment building guardian who is part maid, part watchman, part therapist [...]

Be-Bop en cave, Saint-Germain-des-Près 1951 - photo by Robert Doisneau (1912-1994) I love this photo by Robert Doisneau. Femme Femme Femme is blogging some classic B&W photos. They also just blogged my Memphis Minnie painting along with some photos of her. I basically majored in photography and film in college and I really love the drama of black and white images! Perhaps I will upload a Memphis Minnie...

See male gaze, female gaze Following the comments of Lichanos on Icons of erotic art #21, here is some info about the concept of the gaze in visual culture. The concept of gaze (often also called the gaze or, in French, le regard), in analysing visual culture, is one that deals with how an audience views [...]

Well, kinda. My buddy BadDog and I are always playing “If I ran the Camera Companies” and discussing features that should be on a nice, portable “rangefinder” style camera (a la CartierBresson or Robert Doisneau). I’m of the opinion that (at least for this moment in the economy) people are willing to spend big-bucks on digital [...]
