Matthew Leach Lecturer in Naturopathy, School of Health Sciences, University of South Australia – City East Campus, Adelaide SA, Australia Over the past decade, increasing use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), and its integration into mainstream health care, has raised questions about the level of evidence for the safety and efficacy of these interventions. This text is one of an emerging...

I've written extensively before about how advocates of non-science-based "medical" treatments, such as naturopathy, homeopathy, and all the woo that follows have been waging a war on all fronts against science- and evidence-based medicine in their effort to have their so-called "complementary and alternative medicine" (or the newer, brighter, shinier name "integrative medicine") be perceived as co-equal...

I hadn't realized that Vermont has passed a law requiring insurers to cover naturopathic care . We've covered extensively the quackery that is naturopathy , but really, if a patient chooses to see a quack, it's their business. But with health care costs soaring, requiring insurers to pay for voodoo is a rather bad idea. Already, many plans cover chiropractic, another unproven treatment. Throwing more...

This is not at all funny but I guess ironic might be a better word. The science blogosphere has been alight this past week with the recognition of naturopathy by the state of Minnesota as well as other aspects of alternative medicine. As if the risks of going to an alternative practitioner are not enough, here is an alarming case from Sacramento, CA, of a patient dying at the hands of someone posing...

My little post on naturopathy was more controversial than I had anticipated. Some of the commenters gently (and otherwise) suggested that I should learn more about the subject, so I've been doing a little reading. Here are the basic questions: what is naturopathy, and what might it have to offer that "conventional" medicine lacks? Read the rest of this post... | Read the comments on this post...

Here's a couple of websites commenting on the fact that the state of Minnesota, the liberal bastion, has just passed a law designating practitioners of naturopathy as "doctors." I share their concerns. According to at least one interpretation, they'll be able to admit patients to regular hospitals and manage their care. To the extent that it's even imaginable, I find it frightening. On the other hand,...

I'm even later to the game on this story than my blogging colleague, Orac : ERV , Pharyngula , and denialism blog have each given their takes on the Minnesota's plan to authorize NDs, doctors of naturopathy, to use the title of "Doctor." For two views on what naturopathy is, here is one from the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians and another from Quackwatch . We link - you decide. As...

I know I'm a bit late to this game, but those of you who read ERV , Denialism Blog , and Pharyngula didn't think their prior mention of this story about how the State of Minnesota is going to allow naturopaths to claim the title of "doctor" would stop me from jumping in, even if I am a day late, which in the blogosphere might as well be a year? If you did, you don't know me very well, even after three...
