Libertarianism and Politics

The National Post today published an extract of a speech I recently gave to the Ontario Libertarian Party. If interested, you can read the entire speech here.

Review: Altec Lansing MX6021 Expressionist ULTRA 2.1

Altec Lansing's MX6021 Expressionist ULTRA 2.1 speaker set is an excellent mix of form and function. For deep bass, a long-throw 6.5-inch subwoofer is built into an imposing, industrial-inspired wooden trapezoidal design. The satellite speakers look good too, with 3-inch midrange woofers and 1-inch neodymium tweeters housed behind smoky-grey Perspex fascias. It's great to see a product that celebrates...

When you are the Prime Minister of...

When you are the Prime Minister of Russia you have a LOT of freedom of speech We read: "Vladimir Putin has undiplomatically poked fun at the Georgian leader, Mikheil Saakashvili, saying that it may not be safe to wear a tie around him. Asked at a news conference in Yalta about Saakashvili's visit to Kiev last week, the Russian leader, who is known for his sharp tongue, said that the Georgian leader...

Congressman Fights for Patient Safety

Representative Bruce Braley gave a last-minute speech about medical errors moments before the House voted on the health reform bill earlier this month. He asked who was supposed to speak for the patients. He quoted an Institute of Medicine report stating that, “[t]he most significant way to reduce the cost of medical malpractice is to emphasize patient safety by reducing the number of preventable...

Three weeks today

It has been three weeks already since my implant switch on! I cant believe how fast it has gone, but also how much I am getting used to the various ins and outs of the CI! As I mentioned in my last post, I was finding the programme a bit quiet, so I asked for another appointment, which I had today. It was decided to bring my “one month” appointment forward and have the full hearing test...

Should the Queen read the Queen's speech?

While watching the Queens’ speech, I found myself saying ‘boo’ and ‘nonsense’ etc, when suddenly I felt very guilty. Here was a lady, 83 years old, 57 years as our Queen, a lifetime of service to the country, one of the greatest Britons that ever lived, and I am sitting here heckling her. Of course the Queen is merely reading out text written by the Prime Minister –...

Winning in 2001

Alex Massie at the Spectator writes about the fact very few election results have been "wrong" - they have been the wrong result for the public mood, I suppose would be a quick summary. Perhaps this is true - the campaign of 2001 was a terrible one for the Conservatives, although William Hague did do some great things as leader of the party - his campaign to save the £, for example...

Religious Belief and Public Policy

In light of a RC Bishop excommunicating Rep Patrick Kennedy for supporting a woman's right to choose (see Walt's post below, Time to Trim the Fat), I would like people to read Gov Mario Cuomo's brilliant speech in 1984 at the University of Notre Dame. Religious Belief and Public Morality: A Catholic Governor’s Perspectiveexcerpt:I am free to argue for a governmental policy for a nuclear freeze...

Video Lip Reading: Miles Lost Track Of Timeouts?

Here’s an interesting piece of video from the end of the LSU-Ole Miss game. If you don’t know how badly the Tigers botched the final minute of the game, go here and then come back. If you do, watch LSU Coach Les Miles‘ lips at the :19 mark: That was recorded as live video of Miles and [...]

Rowan tweaks Benedict on unity, women's ordination

Updated. Reuters and the New York Times read the speech that the Archbishop of Canterbury gave at the Vatican this week as both a defense of the Anglican Communion and a mild rebuke of the Roman Catholic approach to ecumenism. The Times of London wants him to be tougher. Bishop Alan Wilson says the speech signals another kind of unity.

Herman Van Rompuy's curious haikus | Jon Henley

First miracle man. Then the EU president. A famous Belgian Most of Herman Van Rompuy's website , as one might perhaps expect of an upstanding European (and since last night, Europeans don't get much more upstanding than Herman), is in three languages. You can, if you choose, read the soon-to-be-ex-Belgian prime minister's acceptance speech on being appointed president of the European Council in Flemish...

WTF? WTF? AT-WHAY E-THAY UCK-FAY?!! Okay, so I was in the car the other day when I hear the news that you are leaving KGSR. There was irony, for Kevin Connor was the one who was doing the announcing....
