Commenting on quarterly figures from the Health Protection Agency on MRSA bloodstream infections and C. difficile, Royal College of Nursing (RCN) General Secretary & Chief Executive, Dr Peter Carter, said: "The RCN is pleased the latest HPA figures show a 30 per cent decrease in reported MRSA cases in the 2007/08 financial year.

The Health Protection Agency has today published its latest quarterly figures on MRSA (meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) bloodstream infections and C. difficile (Clostridium difficile) infections. These relate to the January to March 2008 period, the final quarter in the 2007/2008 financial calendar, providing annual figures for both infections.

Figures released today show that MRSA and CDiff are reducing at Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton. In the last three months there have been 3 MRSA blood stream infections in the hospital, compared with 8 in the same period last year. This shows a 12 month reduction of 62%. In the same three months this year there have been 16 post 48 hour CDiff isolates, compared with 23 last year.
