Europe is Russia's historic neighbour as well as being part of its own identity. St Petersburg, for instance, is a distinctly European city. Europe is both a role model and an object of phobias. This ambivalence has characterised various periods of our national history. Today, fundamental differences set Russia apart from Europe. There is the weakness of our institutions, as well as our different...

Up and Then Down : This is a fascinating article about all aspects of elevators. It's set amid the story of a guy who got stuck in an elevator for 41 hours, but it touches on things like elevator phobias, the social aspects of elevators, and — more interestingly — the logistical aspects of how elevators work. Elevator logistics, it turns out, have some serious theoretical issues to resolve....

What do you do when you have phobias? I am a girl in ninth grade who is afraid of a few things. I am very scared of escalators because I could get my feet caught in them, and afraid of bees because, even though I have never been stung, I might find out that I am allergic and become very sick or even die.

After having had three different sets of dog's teeth enter my skin during the course of my life I am now extremely wary of any dog that I do not know, in fact I now feel very nervous, edgy and uneasy in the presence of a dog that I am not familiar with. Many people have phobias, ranging from spiders to being frightened of the dark! Do you have a phobia and if so what is it?

For as long as I have known, I have kept a *safe* distance from THE Bitter Gourd! I always wondered HOW people ever liked and ate it! My eyes would bugger out if they said they *loved* it and it was their favorite! And I would think... " It does not even look appealing! All spiky!" And who wants to eat bitter stuff? What's the point? It also was not a part of my Mother's cooking, no one would touch...

Looking along my bookshelf, my eye was caught by a title, Triumph Over Fear: A Book of Help and Hope for People with Anxiety, Panic Attacks and Phobias by Jerilyn Ross — originally published by Bantam Books in 1994. When I picked it up again, I was surprised to see how long ago it was [...]

Cade has been a little challenging lately. In the last month or two, he's developed a lot of phobias. Stuff that never used to bother him are now causing him nightmares. He's scared of bugs (especially spiders) -- and while that's normal, he's scared of them even when he doesn't see them -- like they're invading our house. He's scared of "bad men" coming to get him. He's scared of being alone,...

So, I’ve got a DS Lite. A navy blue one, in fact. I’ve had it for a while now, because a friend of mine who was living over in Tokyo during the time of the Japanese release was kind enough to post it to me, and also because I’m pathetic enough to hand over £150 [...]

It's time we all rid ourselves of phobias. The most proximate one might be the loathing of middle seats. Nobody likes them, but you better get ready to embrace them - if you can find one that's empty. This summer...

HERE’S the quandary: how easy is it to find something to do that you have never done before without there being a very good reason (phobias, morality, maintaining public decency . . .) for you never having attempted it?
